Bonnet Numberplates

If anyone had bothered to read the link I posted last night you will find that stick on number plates are not legal on any vehicle registered after 1st Jan 1938, this being the relevant date.

Fixing of front registration plates: vehicles registered on or after the relevant date
6.—(1) This regulation applies to vehicles, other than works trucks, road rollers and
agricultural machines, first registered on or after the relevant date.
(2) Except as provided in paragraph (5), a registration plate must be fixed on the front of the
vehicle in the manner required by paragraph (3).
(3) This paragraph requires the plate to be fixed—
(a) vertically or, where that is not reasonably practicable, in a position as close to the
vertical as is reasonably practicable,
(b) in such a position that in normal daylight the characters of the registration mark are
easily distinguishable from every part of a relevant area having the diagonal length
specified in paragraph (4).
(4) The diagonal length of the relevant area is—
(a) in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is at least 57 millimetres,
22 metres,
(b) in the case of a mark having characters the width of which is 50 millimetres, 21.5
metres,

(5) In the case of a motor cycle or a motor tricycle which does not have a body of a type
which is characteristic of the body of a four-wheeled vehicle—
(a) a registration plate must not be fixed on the front of a vehicle if it was first registered
on or after 1st September 2001,
(b) a plate need not be fixed on the front of the vehicle if it was first registered before 1st
September 2001.

Just because others have stick on number plates does not make it legal!

I think to put it quite clear would be to say,

They are not particulary legal but you are very unlikely to be stopped for having one, unless your being a plonker or the police don't like you.


My brother had one on his 4x4 and he got stopped for no insurance (which he did have but he said the wrong thing so ended up nearly going to court) and they never said anything about it. It was reflective, stuck on wonky and had water damage.

I dont want to start another argument, im aware of the "DSA not knowing of any self adhesive numberplates" but what lets sellers like this get away will calling their products legal and OK ?

im gonna do it because it looks cool! razzers can pull me over as much as they like it aint comin off!

I ripped my first attempt, but the guy sold me another one at discount, and did tell me i should spray the bodywork with soapy water before hand... I haven't actually got round to sticking the 2nd one, i thought i'd wait til my MOT next month... just in case as they're a bugger to get off.

But the lettering, spacing, margins all measured up correctly, it's exactly the same reflectiveness as a solid one... and the flat bit on the front of the bonnet is vertical enough as long as you're not going for a square plate (it's more vertical than my old solid plate) . I have trimmed off some of the white background, but it still has more than enough margin around the lettering.

I've read through the law, and the only thing i can see is that it fails on, is not having the BS mark. Where does it say it can't be a stick on in the actual law book?

I'd be interested to read the BS that the valid number relates to, it may say something in there about what the plate can be constructed of? As it does say in the law book it has to adhere to those standards. But i couldn't find the documentation online ... without having to pay for it.

Having stuck on number plates fitted on the front of a Mini bonnet is not legal according to the letter of the law. However, I have never heard of anyone being pulled over because of them and I've been driving for more than 25 years and interested in cars / Minis for over 40 years.

I was talking to a Policeman once about this sort of thing, and like the post further above ^ he said that they are looking for clarity of registration in the first instance. Change the font or spacing and they'll almost certainly pull you over. Mount a reflective stick-on plate almost vertically on the bonnet using the correct font and spacing and it's very unlikely that they will.

My mates 67 beetle hasn't got a front plate at all. Its been running 2 years about 12,000 miles and made trips to France & Belgium. He says he gets the odd look or double take from police, but has never been stopped. Obviously this isn't legal, im just illustrating a point about how much the police care about this type of thing.

Just had a word with a traffic cop mate of mine and he said that basically (within reason) they are looking at your rear plates, he said that you are 'highly unlikely' to be hassled for a stick on front plate.
He also said that technically he could give a ticket for a badly placed stick on front plate but wouldn't, in the modern world with speed cameras and ANPR the rear plate becomes the most important.

The belief that the rear plate is what they are looking at re: speed cameras is WRONG!

There are some counties, Bedfordshire included, that take the pictures from the front. That way they KNOW who was driving the car too rather than who they are TOLD was driving!

I've had a stick on front plate for ages. Never been stopped for it (quickly finds some wood to touch...). Never failed an MOT for it. It is technically illegal AFAIK but the font, spacing and reflective background are ''correct''. I bet you a lot of coppers etc wouldn't twig it being illegal unless you really wound them up or they were in a proper bad mood. I bet they're a lot more interesed in those that have been deliberatley modified to be misread or to make them creatively spell out the owners name, or even those black and silver ones on a post 73 car...
