any cold air makes a difference to an engine an the chap whos car the is in that picture said he didnt have enough people wanting to have 1 of them plenums to produce them as he offered to make them before

a few years ago there was a chap over on minifinity who did some research regarding under bonnet temps. he set up temp sensors in different places and he found that after a relatively low speed (20-25mph) the air at the back of the engine next to the carb was the same as at the grill, which makes these induction type kits pretty pointles

Yeh and if everyone drove around at 20-25MPH then an induction kit would pointless but they don't do they.

I would have though that you'd still get the advantage of it essentially being a ram air system that in itself cools the air. l_jonez have you got a link to the thread about this on minifinity I'd love to do some more reading about this.

yes i mean any thing over that speed makes it pointless. there is no such thing as "ram air" as the engine will only suck in a specified amount of air, to get any more into an engine you need forced induction.

There was also an article in one of the mini mags about 4 or 5 months ago where one of the racing mini companies took a mini to an air tunnel to test its aerodynamics with modified bits and bobs. Im fairly sure they found that the back of the engine bay is like a wall which stops all the cold air which gets caught by the grille, meaning the back of the engine bay is almost as cool as where the grille is. They also noted that when people prop up the back of the bonnet (to provide an outlet for hot air out of the back of the engine bay) they're actually causing a pressure difference between where the bonnet is raised and the engine bay which actually sucks in air and causes massive drag. - not that thats massively relevant to the current discussion.

yeah it will add weight and slow you down

Just be careful in the winter, i had a similar set up on my old engine, then when it was really cold, the carb then freezes up!

I read somewhere that induction kits make little to no difference on small bore engines anyway, Minis or not.

If you are trying to get cooler air to the carb then why dont you either use some thermal wrap on then LCB or if you can remove the manifold for a time get it coated in that new heat shielding ceramic coat which will reduce the heat produced by the exaughst in the engine bay and keep the heat in the exaughst which is supposed to help the exaughst systems efficiency so ive heard.

Doing it this way also means you dont have to have a big pipe cluttering up your engine bay, something like this was advertised in mini mag a month or 2 ago dunno if its the same company..... Zircotec
