Had I known it was so loud I would have fabbed up some sort of electronic reverse setup.
Anyone else experience the same?

I filled the reverse box with 10w50 and have triple checked the oil level. The straight cut whine is nearly intolerable except on a full blown track cars. I also get a TON of noise from the chain and reverse box even in neutral coasting down a hill. Due the the way the reverse box is designed, I believe it acts like a bicycle "clicker" that clicks when you are coasting down the street. It is exceptionally audible even over the straight cut whine. That combined with the straight cut gears on the unit make it intolerable. I'll try and get some video tomorrow but I was curious if anyone else has had this problem with the reverse box.

Is the straight cut gears, the way pro-motive incorporated the reverse gearbox, the chain and sprockets are ALWAYS moving, so it ticks along like a bicycle would coasting and makes a hell of a racket doing so. The straight cut gear whine is so loud its nearly impossible to have a conversation unless you're in neutral.
great idea, horrible testing and execution. I paid a pretty penny for the reverse box as well before pro-motive made them standard.
If I had to do it again I would go with an electric reverse. The Quaife ATB Reverse box is insanely loud, racecar straight cut gear ear plugs loud.
Their lack of response to my emails pretty much tells me thats just the way it is.
A starter motor for reverse would be a much better solution and cause much less wear and tear on the chain and sprockets as well.
Thanks for the reply, really appreciate the info.

erm...wait... so only in reverse? how often are you reversing this car to get annoyed about the sound lol?

The chain and sprockets will always make noise regardless of whether you have an mechanical or electric reverse or not , I'm surprised you can here the chain though
Having been in a few Z cars mini's with the same engine the whine may be coming from the various drive boxes. ie transfer box, reverse box
Cheers
