When we were at Bingley at the beginning of the year we asked FJ for two quotes for my boy. The quote was for a 17 year just passed his test, the car was a mini with a 998 and or a 1275. Alloy wheels, hi lo's.

998 tpft £425
1275 tpft £425
998 fully comp £815
1275 fully comp £815 but with a higher excess. 4000 miles per annum, garaged. Price guaranteed for a year with a reference number for backup.

Was this with you added to the policy aswell Niel?
Was your son at college or working?
Howmany years driving/ncb?
Do you live in a stupidly low risk postcode?
As its all something that factors in.
(just so others can get a rough idea)

My daughters was about £100 dearer, 998cc, 17, no ncd, just passed her test, student, used for school every day, but for 6000 miles pa, me as a named driver, in a stupidly low risk postcode, with FJ.
Bear in mind you won't build up any ncd, but in a few years if you do want to change to a normal policy, (rather than a classic policy) most insurers will give you a discount based on years of driving equal to a few years ncd.

At that price I'd ask for proof of the insurance. That price at that age is virtually impossible
it would probably be about 300 - 400 more
Adam

They're paying about £800, with footman james, I'll try and find some posts where I read them :)

Okay, I had a number of quotes to add my 17 year old son to the Policy of one of our cars. Because what the point of learning to drive if you pass your test and can't. Plus I need someone to take me to the pub.

At the time we had a Volvo S40, a mk3 cavalier and an Mx5

So this is assuming he's passed his test, using the no claims of a 43 year old.

£2250 for the Cavalier
£3500 for the Volvo and
£no quote possible for the MX5

So as I hated the volvo, we decided to sell that and buy a car for shopping and local trips (the MX5 is a sunny day only car)

Group 1 cars :

12V Corsa £1990

Cinquencento SX (not the sporting) £1500

Mini 1000 £1275

All via direct line and fully comp.

So I decide to sell volvo and buy a mini (I've had 3)

Anyway Because I'll be using the cavalier to commute and it'll be on business class insurance the mini could go ona classic policy. Footman james did me 4 quotes

850 city ,998 mayfair ,1275 sprite All TPFT all £763

And 1275 Cooper £1158

So any 17 year old who says that the insurance on a mini cost them £800 has the car in thier parents name.

No.
Maybe you just didn't get a quote in his name from FJ.
And my daughters insurance is still cheaper than yours for her car, in her name, as I said, with me as a named driver.
If you front for your son, you will get charged the same price, or even more than for insuring him if they spot it.

Actually, my beach buggy (my car, my name) is less than £200 fully comp, but even that only goes up to £1100 with her on with FJ, and that's a 1600cc. (But I'm not doing it). But as she has her own policy with them, I expect they don't believe I'm fronting it for her.

I was quoted by Fotnam James, £600 Third Party Fire & Theft.
BUT .. I couldn't have the car insured as it was only 14 years, 6 months old :) They said they only insure Mini's 15 years or older! But they have saved the quote so I can insure it with them once its 15 years old!

I'd ring back and check with someone else about that. They insure my 2000 plate MPI under a classic policy so it is possible.

I pay £1700 with adrian flux, but my car is heavily modified. though still a 998.
Got a quote of £2200 for a 1.6litre vuaxhall engine conversion.

A standard 1275 with foot man james, totally unmodified would probly cost you arround £800.

Yes this was with me as a named driver
Scott is at college
No NCB
No we do not live in a stupidly low risk area.

There were no hidden factors other than those i have already mentioned, what you have to remember with FJ is that there is no NCD accrued so even though you will be insured to drive if you decide to buy a different type of car you won't have any NCD to use for insuring the car so basically back to square one.

Some insurance companies in the past did take into consideration how long you have been driving say on you parents insurance and then automatically gave you some NCD. It would not have been the same amount as for someone who had insured their car from day one but a percentage.

I am afraid car insurance is a con especially for youngsters but if you shop around you will find deals, just be prepared to use the phone as well as comparison websites.

I was on a £605 odd policy as a new driver on a 1985 998 mayfair, my premium went UP to £750 last month, no accidents or claims.
So imagine my surprise when i was quoted £700 for a 1995 sidewalk spi!
