So this hasn't been updated for a while! the mini has been a bare shell sitting on the floor for a while now, was going to get it sandblasted (and i still intend too) but the sandblaster I've been contacting has just not been replying to me, even after i accepted there quote. This has made me question if i really want to do business with them so I've decided to wait and look for another one. In the mean time I've been focusing on my apprenticeship and working my way up. Atm there is little to no money for the project so progress is slow. However next week i have booked a week off and I'm planning on getting the f-series engine out of the accord. The other night i put it up on axle stands and started to strip it down. My dad is restoring his land rover next to the Honda so it's given me a bit of encouragement and company! Enjoy the photo dump :) I'm still excited about this build and cannot wait for the little beast to be back on the road.

Also i purchased an engine stand so i can work on, clean up and paint the Honda engine properly.

Thanks man! Got a week untill i'm back at work and the front of the bay is pretty much clear, now need to tackle the back of the engine, lots of labeling up of connectors and disconnecting breather hoses and stuff that i'm still learning what it does... Which is fun! Should be out by the end of the week :)

Great stuff dude!! Bit of a weird question for you, but do you reckon these weigh much more than the other popular SOHC VTEC engines like the D15B's and the D16's!?

Keep up the good work, bro  =] !!

Well when i was looking up about the f-series engine, it was described as hondas big block, similar to the h-series engines, so to me it does sound heavier, however i can't find an actual weight for this engine anywhere (haynes don't make a manual for this car ). If i can figure it out i'll try and get it weighed when it's out of the car.

Hmmm yeah...that'd be great if you could find out more dude!! Only reason I ask is I'd love to do something similar if I could get some funds together and the SOHC's seem the most reasonable options for the money, let alone the performance side of things... besides I've a lot of Honda headed friends haha!!

Why not dude, if you approach it like i am, and you can get a daily driver to get you places and you can accept that the mini may be off the road a long time while you get the funds together, it's very do-able. I'm seriously expecting this project to take a few years, but thats okay as i want it to be perfect... Update-wise, it looks like i'm all good to get the engine out either tomorrow or saturday, then i can split the engine and gearbox and get the engine mounted up on the stand before i go back to work.

Yeah that'd be the best plan, I just need to find some work...being a poor penniless student makes it rather frustrating, I'll hopefully be able to get some work even though I'm at college full time!! The Mini's been off the road for a while anyways...so I might as well get it back on the road, faster, more reliable and FASTER hahaha!! Yeah I shall be following your thread closely dude  :highfive: !!

Thats the spirit, i took the mini off the road when i was still in college, but then i got my apprenticeship so atleast i have a little money coming in atm (although it's apprentice minimum age haha) Just do a little here and there at weekends, get the mini shell safe and clean, and then just slowly build it up! I wish you luck mate

Cheers dude =] , hopefully learn things by watching your progress, luckily my shell is pretty much rust free, being an Irish shell and it's hardly ever been used haha!! I'll hopefully have a conversion thread started sometime in the future  :highfive: !!

So i've achieved my goal! Booked a week off work with the intention of getting the vtec powerplant out, and onto a stand. It's the end of the week and i'm happy to say i did it :)

I have a collosal storage of random pictures as i was taking pictures of most things that i knew would confuse me when trying to put this puzzle back together, i've also been labeling the loom like crazy (which still needs to be extracted from the accord shell...).

Clutch off, flywheel looks okay, going to get them checked at work and replace if needs be (might do anyway because why not.)

Ut-oh! Another job to add to the list

2014-08-09104135_zps3442421a.jpg

Mount on...

2014-08-09104900_zps35b93651.jpg

And on the stand! Me and my dad had to physically lift up the engine to put it on the stand as the engine crane and engine stand don't really work together, even though they're both made by the same manufacturer... grumble grumble... But alas! It's on the stand and i can slowly work on it and clean it up and make it look great! Next step is to attack the honda wiring, strip the shell of any useful items and then send it to the scrapheap! (oh and i better fix up the mini at some point... that seems quite important?).

I'd love to do something like this one day. I've got no mechanical experience but how better to learn! I'll definitely be following this thread. Best of luck to you!

Are you going to re-use the rear subframe? Get it blasted when you get the shell done and and powder coated? Or is it a bit too oxidised for that?!

What can you source from the donor car? Engine mounts, dials, loom, any of the ancillaries? Is my (lack of) mechanical expertise showing yet haha?

Thankyou! I havn't thought about the rear subframe yet to be honest, it didn't look great and it's been repaired before (frowned upon to repair chassis' and subframes to be honest) so think i may be replacing it, i want this car to be mint by the time i've done with it, with no risk of any weak components braking under the higher horse power.

From the donor car i'm going to take all the mounts, dials, loom, pedalbox, gear linkages, all the ancillaries just so i have options. I'm still not 100% on what parts can carry over, but i'm most likely going to stick with the honda dials, most of the ancillaries (except for the pointless ones such as the AC pump and Power steering pump as my mini will have neither of these). But the manifolds, alternator, stater motor stuff like that i'll stick with. The mounts will most likely be purchased with the conversion subframe, if not i'll get some made up. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, i've had a long day at work!

All i can suggest is that if you really would like to do something like this, and you are seriously consider it, make sure you know it'll be a long term project. I've only been training in mechanics for a year now, and been tinkering with the mini for a year or 2 before that, so i'm no expert at this and will be learning for quite some time. I'd suggest to just get stuck in and use this forum and other forums to help you whenever you get stuck or are unsure of anything. Purchase some haynes manuals and some workshop manuals and indulge in it!

Mini has moved from it's nice end of the barn to the opposite end of the barn with the honda, the barn is still being rebuilt so progress is slow but we're now setting up a long temporary extension cable so we can use power tools and lights. Hoping some bays will be complete over the next few months and we'll be the first to move in.

Literally sat the shell on the subframe (no bolts!) and me and my dad picked up the front and pushed it like a wheelbarrow 100-200m down to the other end of the barn

going to be a tight squeeze.... the inlet manifold needs some work as it's mahoosive and i'd like to avoid adding a bulkhead box if possible.

The minis getting sandblasted in january, going to be bracing the shell with steel just incase it all falls apart... Building up a supply of etch primer to coat the bare metal so it doesnt rust again... Exciting times! After it's blasted, more welding practice will happen and i'll start repairing parts of the shell. Hopefully it'll go faster once i start as this is the part of the build i'm least looking forward too... My pay goes up in march as i'll have completed the first year of my apprenticeship so i will then be buying more parts for the project (after i get a bike on the road!!)
