My Cooper wasn't in bad nick when I put him away, but it's now at least four years on and time has taken its toll on the engine and paintwork.

Basic plans are to get him back on the road, but the "plans for the year" thread got me thinking:

On 1990 Mainstream Cooper JCG S

Essential:

Free clutch

Remove megajolt and fit original electronic dizzy + coil.

Recommission engine

Replace scratched front windscreen.

Replace evil wipers

Sort out drivers side door lock mechanism.

Remove harnesses and instal new inertia seatbelts

Pass Mot

Would be nice:

Source JCG S spec twin carbs to replace missing ones

Install central locking.

Fit 'accessory' socket.

Paintwork restoration / respray.

Find and fit classic roof rack.

Add Fogs and Driving lights.

Add DNS throttle pedal.

It's nice to know there is another carb Rover Cooper 'S' being cared for. Good luck with it. Do you know when the conversion was done?

Afraid I know very little about the car, only that it had the conversion done at some point but has subsequently been respray and a lot of the parts gone missing. It still has the blue Janspeed Cooper S head, oil cooler and the rest of the engine, but is missing the carb and any decals.

Probably will be selling it at some point, should be everything minus a laptop to run it from! I'll try and quote you both again when I get around to listing it in F/S.

Progress Update:

Mini up on the lift today so was able to get a good look around. Bodywork is largely in very good condition, though there are a few areas that need some TLC. A coat of waxoyl wouldn't go amiss either.

Megajolt is now off, had to pillage a spare engine for a few replacement bolts as megajolt ones are longer so don't fit once the brackets and trigger week are removed.

Wiring up the dizzy is proving a bit of a pain, if only because there are only 'oil stain' black wires under the bonnet!

Clutch is free as a bird now, which was one of the main worries I had earlier.

Hopefully he'll be back on the drive this evening, then it's just the driver's door lock and the windscreen/wipers to sort out before MOT can be booked.

These are all the bits for the S conversion. The air box is not essential as John Cooper Garages fitted K&N pancakes as an option.

You may be able to get a new correct Janspeed exhaust system through the RSP Cooper Register

Does your car have a plate with the conversion number on the cross member to the right of the driver's seat?

I've just bought a 91 Mainstream Cooper, which helpfully has been restored already for me!  They seem to be extremely rare models now.

The RSP before it had stripes, spots and leather etc., as did the spi that came just after it, but for less than 18 months (that's right isn't it?) there was this 'simple' Cooper with relatively spartan interior, no stripes and no spots...

Good luck with the recomissioning!

Hi Rob, you're spot on & as some are now mentioning, those carb mainstreams are now becoming rarer than RSP's.  A good find :teehee:

I spotted 12 RSPs, including mine, at Beaulieu yesterday and only one Mainstream (with S conversion), though the RSPs do stand out more easily with their sunroofs. It just goes to show how rare the Mainstream has become.

There were 19,899 Mainstreams manufactured and only 1650 RSPs.

Even the Mini Cooper Register has fewer Mainstreams than RSPs.

Been a while, but he's now MOT'd and ready to get insurance and tax today. Still planning on getting more of the old S bits together, but for now he'll be staying as a mainstream with a part S conversion.
