imagine most posters will be keen as mustard ;-)

I'm sure if it was your mini stolen then given a new identity you'd be fairly upset.

was there one stolen or is it just pitchfork time again? nice to know that everyone on here is so honest and law abiding ;-)

One stolen from Chatham railway station (less than 10 miles from me) the other week.

And I'm honest and law abiding. (apart from speeding)

I don't understand why this always causes so much controversy??

Ringing cars causes so many problems and people to get into trouble for inadvertently purchasing a stolen car or one with the incorrect identity.

At the end of the day it is illegal and needs to be stopped. So many Mini owners seem to be loosing their cars just lately and not getting them back. It's not drunk joy riders, its car thieves who either want to strip them for parts or assign another identity to them which apparently can be bought without a problem on eBay!

It's madness to just let it slide.

Thing is, this is a car forum for car enthusiasts. This is one of the things we talk about and if we can have some input into stopping some of it between us then i think that's a pretty good thing to do.

I don't get why that would seem like a joke?

Well Ive taken your reg down from posts and reported you for speeding to:

Police

Ebay

Council

Thos traffic wombles on the M1

Mike at no 56

The AA

The RAC

I heard that Drunk drivers often speed. So with a coalition government that means that by speeding you must be drunk.

Drunk drivers cause accidents, therefor you are personally responsible for the guy that drove into my mini. Can I please send you the bill for repairs?

(not making light of thefts here. I too have been a victim. Just the pitch fork response.)

Is it legal to buy the identity from the legal owner and then build it back up from a genuine heritage shell or is there more to it then that. (genuine question)

There's a bit more to it than that.

Basically, it works on a points system, but as only the engine and shell have identifiable numbers then it's some what academic.

Your vehicle must have 8 or more points from the table below if you want to keep the original registration number. 5 of these points must come from having the original or new and unmodified chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame.

Part Points Chassis, monocoque bodyshell (body and chassis as one unit) or frame - original or new and unmodified (direct from manufacturer) 5

Suspension (front and back) - original 2

Axles (both) - original 2

Transmission - original 2

Steering assembly - original 2

Engine - original 1

Thanks for that Carlos.

Where it says original, I think it means unmodified and period rather than from the original car.

So you could go and buy a new subframe and as long as it was correct for the car you'd still get the points. If you fitted a rear beam and coil overs you wouldn't (just my interpretation)

As subframes don't have any dates stamped on them, no-one would know anyway.

I mean thats really giving it two fingers isnt it ? Thats really saying that they know its wrong to sell it but dont give a toss .

And im sure i have read somewhere that a v5/vin must stay witha vehicle untill its scrapped , then it must be surrenderd to the DVLA , and its a offence to not do so ?

So why doesnt the police or Egay do anything ? Im not talking 5 years inside with Bubba , just a £1000 fine . A fe of those made public would put a stop to it .
