Does anyone know if this type of sandwich plate with a built in thermostat will fit the A Series block? It uses a central extension bolt 3/4 UNF available and has 1/2 BSP outlet ports. It would be a very good way to fit a thermostat into the oil cooler take off. The P/T No is Mocal M-OTSP-1. I will try to contact Mocal UK tomorrow.

I have the same, but.... You need to space the standard housing from the block.

Does that mean making a special spacer or is there one readily available? Is that because the thermostat fouls as I guess the ports need to face the flywheel?

Yep I wanted them to face the flywheel so the nut on the back gets in the way. I used a sender take off from somerford which was a lump of alloy with some holes drilled in it.

Do you have any photos of the install by any chance? Is the Somerford sender an off the shelf part or does it need to be machined to suit?

Does this mean there is another gasket and potential place to leak oil?

Mocal also do an in-line thermostat with 1/2 BSP ports

I've seen this one but it's about £90 and would mean 4 hoses and double the amount of pipe fittings. It's also pretty big and would take up quite a bit of space in the engine bay.

you're talking about the oil stat - he's talking about an in-line adapter with a hole for the temp sender fitted to one of the oil lines.

Personally I'd put the oil stat in the sump. I don't care what the temp in the cooler is, It's the oil about to be pumped around the engine I care about.

and I found this on Mocal's website:

Oil temperature sensing is a necessary tool to use in decisions about oil cooling. We can assist in many ways. The first decision is to establish what temperature you need to know, is it a) The maximum oil temperature i.e. the oil in the sump or b) if a cooling device is fitted the temperature of the oil going to the bearings (the first bearing not the last in line) or gears. If you require a) fit the sensor in the sump, in the oil line going to the cooler, in a remote filter installed before the cooler or in an oil cooler take off between filter head and filter. If b) in the return from the cooler or oilstat if fitted.

Anyone got any photos they can share of oil cooler thermostat installed?

Don't know what the intention is of a 'thermostat in the sump'? Never heard of this. The purpose of the oil thermostat is to only bring the oil cooler into the cooling loop when the oil temp reaches the necessary temperature and then open the waxstat to allow oil to flow through the cooler, as opposed to flowing through it all the time and possibly running too cool ie in cold weather conditions.

Sorry I the engine is out of the car in bits and at the machine shop at the mo. And old pic might help. This is running the Mocal thermostat you have pictured above

Thanks Graham, that's the kind of neat install I had in mind. What type of hoses have you used? Are these push on fittings ie the hose on to the pipe fitting?

Graham, did you get the block spacer machined or was it available off the shelf? Are you using a Swiftune filter head?
