Roof Chop

Hi guys,

 

Looking to start my new project soon and have decided to replicate a mini sprint. I have a shell but am wondering if anyone hs any experience of doing a roof chop and if so any advice or how tos?

There is a lot more to converting a mini into a sprint than just the roof. Its taking a section of the bodywork out all round as well.

Just know that there is ALOT of work involved as you need to change the size of the roof panel to make it fit which usually involves chopping the roof skin into several pieces and then stitching it back up with pieces added.

 

There is a member on here called CHOP who has done this. His build thread can be found in the projects section.

What's your meal working background?

 

Making a sprint essentially requires the shell to be cut into 3 different sections and then material is removed from the roof and body line. I've been collecting photos of Sprints mid chop for a while as reference for one I want to do latter this year. 

 

The pictures bellow are of one Neville Trickett did that I found via google.

i have also decided to have a go at building a sprint,, i have opted to build a BMC sprint as they kept the roof gutter, and i perfer that look..

 

i had a mk2 shell kickign about,, so why not....

 

the A & B pillars have been cut in a scarf type joint which will give me a good overlap for when re welding,,i will also be inserting T steel inside the pillars where the seams were to give the strength back.. the front pillar will be un-stitched to allow me to cant the A pillar back and re align with the roof pillar,, 

 

i cut the roof off on sunday

 

no problems so far...

new floor, new boot floor, new heel board, new sills inner/outer  etc...

 slowly coming back together

I love this kind of work

 

I probably have the skills to do it , in small bits (welder / mechanic by trade)

 

it's the fact that so many area's are being worked on as the assembly goes back together at the same time , (this would be my down fall)

 

I've seen quite a few Neville Trickett pic's - and am certain I would fail - potentially wasting a car in the process

 

I've made a few convertibles in my time , & they are much less work than this & are more forgiving as much less panels to align / cut down / increase

 

respect to anyone who completes one of these - they are beautiful
