I used it to tidy my speaker wires with Tessa loom tape to close off the ends. Go to the full post

Hi everyone,

I decided to try and tidy up the wiring loom a little this weekend using some black insulation tape and while it looks decent, I was wondering if there was a neater solution. I was thinking some kind of braiding would look pretty cool. I did a quick google search and couldn't find anything on the forum related to this idea. If there is already a thread on this topic, I apologise in advance.

Cheers,

Vinay

Thanks dude. They've got a supplier about 15km from my place :) I'll give em a call in the am and check their stock and costings.

I think Hellerman Tyton stuff might be worth looking at on there.  Loads of other brands like Techflex. I think RS do their own kits for braiding too.

But bear in mind that braid collects dirt and oil as if it's magnetic. At least with nice smooth tape it doesn't stick as much and when it does it tends to wipe off fairly easily.

A previous owner of my car put steel braid on everything and I'd like to shake him warmly by the neck for doing it as it's made some stuff a nightmare to work on.

Hmm, didn't think of that... surely the plastic braiding would be alright though?

The braid itself would be OK but all those little holes and hollows will fill up fast. Note that nowadays braided brake hoses have a PVC covering over the stainless braid - they didn't used to have this.

The braid is a royal PITA to fit too.  I did a custom loom for an Alfa-Sud race car with it, at customers request.............  I wished I'd been able to tape it with loom tape (i.e. non-adhesive).

Looked pretty good in the end though, even if I do say so myself !!

You need to use a hot edge to "cut" it too.  If you use a knife to cut it it frays like mad, so if you are serious about it make a heated cutting "blade" using an off-cut of sheet steel and an old soldering iron.

Phil.

Sounds like it is going to be a bit of a hassle to get it setup... but it looks so good. Maybe the non-metallic stuff is the best of both worlds option in this case.
