To fit the proper 10" mini wheels.
Remembering that in the 60's, people used to make wheels wider by inserting a band, about 20 years ago, I put a 10" Mini wheel in a lathe, and set about hacking it into slices.
I reassembled it, with an additional 2" band, into a 5 1/2 J wheel with a 1/2" narrower fitting well WHICH WAS OUTSIDE THE DISH. which did look a bit odd.
When fitted on the hub, it cleared the 8.4" calipers. ( To provide a bit of extra clearance I carefully rounded off the corner of the caliper) .
A good friend in the motor industry got quite excited and showed it to some firms, but by then the Mini's life was over and tooling costs were too high for a rather small retro market.
