hello, sorry if this has already been posted!

just wondering how does everyone insure their engine conversion?

im 18 with 1 yrs ncb and wanting a 1275 or bigger bore in my 998. wondering whether anyone else has done this and is it massively expensive on insurance plus do you change it on log book and therefore don't have to add it as a mod on insurance.

anyone as young as me insured on a k series conversion?

It is modified from the original fit of the car. It will go up, it can, in some cases, double premiums.

I'm swapping my 850 for a 1275, swapping drum brakes to discs and a few other little mods.

Be interesting to see how many people actually declare their engine swaps / mods.....

Also if someone wasn't to declare it what could the fall-outs be?

Not declaring mods can lead to you not being insured, which can be a big issue if you have just caused an accident where there are large claims to be made for injury and damage. Since you have no insurance cover you will have to cover the legal costs and the claim costs. Plus future premiums will hike thanks to you having to put down you have been denied insurance.

Theoretically speaking you should declare all modifications from standard including stickers and small things like that but I doubt many people declare the tiny tiny things. But declare all major modifications and you should be ok if you need to claim.

I can't comment on how much more it will cost with a larger engine. I am expecting my insurance to go from £240 which it is now with a modified 998 to around £500 when I put in the next engine but that will be a highly modified 16v and the car will also be getting further modified.

I guess ill have to swallow the extra then once mine is all done.

The insurance is in the Mrs name so maybe the will see it as a lady driver and be nice and leave it cheap :shy:

There was some law brought out a few years ago which suggested this was sexist.

I had a play with main drivers on my multi-car policy and if I put the wife on the more powerful car it's more expensive. We both passed our test more than 10 years ago, and both have more than 10 years no claims. There is no logic to insurance

what year is your 850? ive got a 92 city e, its been up for sale but recently re found my love for minis but im not keen on the look of mine, I prefer the 70's minis but as they are so expensive im considering making it a lookalike but want a bigger powerplant to make it more bearable on the daily grind.

youre right carlos, no logic, defo the most annoying part of being a carguy or girl! there was something brought out a few years ago that stated that insurance co's couldn't consider the gender of a person when giving them a quote as at the time guys insurance tended to be double the average girls policy price!

Gender is a protected characteristic under the equality act, but so is age...........

Insurance, 6 yrs no claim bonus, went from a 998 a series with no mods on 500.00 a year.. to a 1.3 micra lump with extra modifications etc.. now costs 400.00 a year. Depends which insurance company you go with.. mine loves modified cars as they tend to think we look after them :)

From my experience the insurance company tend to just class the car as the equivalent 1275 car. I did need to get an engineer's report to prove that all the work was done to a good standard and upgrade the brakes. Price wise the premium didn't change other than a £25 administration cost.
