Recommend Me A Multimeter

People always ask me about the meter I use and I use a Fluke, which is way beyond the price scale of the normal hobbyist or someone who will use a Multimeter twice a year! Depending the state of your Mini Electrics it cold be a lot more lol

Well £400+ for a Fluke is beyond most peoples requirements so having a bit of time off I decided to have a play with a few meters and see what you get for your money.

Avoid the £4.95 ones off ebay they are very smart looking, but thats where the good news ends, at the higher automotive volt reading they are upto 1v out! so thats no good for checking your charging circuit.
The condition of the Red and Black leads are poor quality and even have a resistance form new. I tried the £10-18 ones by Mastech and they were poorly made on the track on the rotary switch

After testing a few more with the intention of stocking them to provide friends with something rasonable to do basic stuff with. I came upon a recommended meter made by Uni-T model UT136C, in testing it gave very acceptible results on the 2 main modes you use on classic cars 1. Volts 2. Ohms
I ran the Uni 136 in a direct test against my Fluke which has been back for calibration in the last 2 months, and on a regulated voltage output was 0.01v at 6v and 0.03v out at 15v so perfectly acceptible results. Its also auto sensing on voltage and has auto power off

It not bad made for £13.81 with free P/P from the UK on the popular auction site, and I bought some based on that test, I obviously use the Fluke in the workshop, but keep the Uni-T 136c in the car and Mini for quick testing when out.

Obviously I have no connection with the manufacturer and only did the test so as to recommend a meter to members here on TMF
