Hi Folks.

Ive been on here for a few years. Story started 7 years ago when I first picked up my MPI Mini. Car was supposed to be my first car but due to the price of insurance it never made it into daily driver duties and I decided to spend it on a restoration instead.

7 years ago how it

Fast forward 2 years

For most people that would have been enough but for me that was only the start. I continued modifying it for a few years going through 2 interiors, 2 sets of suspension and plenty of other extras in between.

2014 it looked like this

In my eyes id achieved what i wanted to build from when i was 12/13 and i was content with it. It looked great, sounded good and never failed to put a smile on my face.

So what went wrong? I fell out of love with minis, got into vw's and was thinking of selling up to start a new project. then i realized how much id realistically get for the car and what a top level mk1/2 golf would cost and I though sod that, I know minis so lets start again.

so last October i ended up with this

Something I decide I wanted was a super tidy engine bay, I often look at some minis and think thats what really lets them down so i set to work removing brackets and welding holes up

At this stage id finished most of the welding so i threw some paint on to protect it over winter. Im sure i dont need to say that isnt the finished state. There  is plenty of work before its final paint.

I will be running a pedal box inside to remove that cylinders form the bulkhead a clean it up.

Back in the summer I started refurbishing some parts

Autolifers-Jayme-Mini-39_zpszdgs4iex.jpg

Lower arms got the casting marks removed to clean them up

Autolifers-Jayme-Mini-39_zpszdgs4iex.jpg

etch primed  and had the faces painted silver

Autolifers-Jayme-Mini-40_zps3ylynq44.jpg

and painted with vht wrinkle paint as

Drive shafts also got the ocd treatment. bare metaled, etched, loads of high build, flatted, then painted and clear coated before wet sanding

Some nice shiny bits there ready to go on! I like your unusual crackle painted suspension parts and I agree that a minimalist engine bay looks great, especially with the clean looking BMW head. Keep up the good work,

Cheers John, the crackle finish has turned out very nice; even better than the pictures it has cured well and should give a very durable finish. I will be doing my subframe with it also.

One tip for you mate using that crackle finish is that dirt sticks to it and it's horrific to try and clean. I did the valve cover on my engine a few months ago in lovely bright red and now it's a horrible to clean red.
Personally wouldn't touch the stuff again, especially for sub frames etc where you want to be able to hose down and inspect
Just my opinion tho of course.
Good luck with the build all the same

Ah never though of that, that kind oh has me thinking. may have to consider it a tad further.  Was going to coat all in some carbon collective, that might help a bit.

Cheers for the advice dude.

Been a bit bored today so thought id draw up the top engine steady pickup plate for my engine steady, usually get stuff like this laser cut at work but we are very busy atm and there's no time to do it; despite it probably only taking 30-40 secs to cut. Will be sending this away this week to another company along with some gussets and revised seat mounts from the last set i designed.

Autolifers-Jayme-Mini-78_zpsnrua34a3.jpg

plate has been drawn to match the billet blanking plate ive bought  with the pickup part added on to secure the top engine steady

Autolifers-Jayme-Mini-77_zpsqaqoeiyg.jpg

made a cardboard template to ensure it lines  up and the top hole was in the right spot, will be skinning it in carbon fiber so it looks neat and adds some detail to the bay.

Nice work, looking to do a similar thing with my bay when I get to it.
