My guess

180bhp spec £12,000

360bhp spec £20,000

It might not be so bad. Looks to be more scope for economies of scale, depends how deep their pockets are, unless they can get a stack of advance orders. Only thing is the cheaper it gets, the more expensive the Hayabusa will be.

Do you think it'll have 6 reverse gears too, seems likely  :w00t:

Hello, I am Andy from Vetech

We were approached by one of your members to join and give some feedback on what we are doing.

A quick brief introduction

We are a Design and Development Company that deals primarily with blue chip companies supplying our design services very successfully for the last 22 years. We have a prototyping workshop that we use to back up our design services that includes 4 CNC machine centres, 3 Injection moulding machines and various toolroom related equipment. We also have a development area in which we can perform all types of testing. We were looking for our own product to fill in quiet spells on the CNC machines (we don’t use them as a jobbing shop). We already had the Hayabusa engine which was bought a long time ago to be fitted into our directors Cooper S at some point. From this came the idea to put the Hayabusa in the front, trying to keep the modifications to a standard Mini to the minimum.

The work started in earnest about 4 years ago. The first job was to reverse engineer on CAD all the standard Suzuki parts to be used which was a major undertaking.  The main casings where fully CNC machined, and we have made fixtures to machine them easily. We had the engine line bored at the beginning of this year. Trying to balance design time with customer jobs meant lots of out of hours work but we finally got the engine running on our own freshly installed dyno back in September producing 190bhp at the driveshafts.

We have since been working on the resurrection of the Mini, our directors 1969 Cooper S that he has owned since he was 18, it had in its life seen several A series engines last running a 1380 on split 45’s. That as you can see is nearing completion and we are hoping to get it driving over Christmas.

As regards your questions:

Firstly the price. This is ongoing  work, but we are striving to get the cost to a target that the customer is happy with and obviously covers our costs. We are stripping out the bells and whistles but are refusing to “cheapen” the end product i.e. still keep the quality. We are hoping to release this information by mid January 2016

Vetech don't produce water pumps as asked by miniQ.

Neither are we anything to do with the toy company Vtech.

Apologies also for any confusion with the Honda Vtec, but in 1994 when we chose our company name we could not have foreseen the impending confusion.

As you can see this is a long process so we are not jumping on the Zcars Slot, Simon from Z cars has had a long conversation with us and was interested in this project.

Ethel asked about 6 speed, yes full 6speed sequential box plus a full neutral between 1st and reverse and a full reverse gear.

Any questions please feel free to ask

We are also running updates on our facebook page and website www.vetech.co.uk

I can assure you that this is causing quite a stir in the mini scene! Over on the turbominis & 16V mini club forums there are lots of people on the edge of their seats - including myself! I have a mini with an R1 engine in the front running a chain drive. The extra grunt and deletion of the chain drive for me is very appealing. Thank you for your introduction Andy, very much looking forward to the updates in January '16

As regards engine performance, its not a screamer as an R1 engine, it revs to 11000rpm, we have 190bhp at driveshaft's at 9000rpm, we never plotted the torque curve as it was something we weren't worried about as the standard Hayabusa has over 100ft/lb at 6000rpm, we are getting more power than a standard engine by subtle tweaks.

I personally have been involved with supercharging these engines in single seater race cars and they where producing 410bhp at wheels with torque about 190ft/lb, the engine all ready has an optional auxiliary to drive the supercharger. We also know people that have been involved with turbo Hayabusa's as well

Glad you joined to say hello after my email!  Sounds like you are going about this the right way which is great to see.

Shame its happening to an original Cooper S but beggars can't be choosers

The car has been heavily modified in the past, so not exactly standard. However we will show also how easily it will be to revert back to a A series afterwards if you so wanted to. We are currently looking to buy a mini as a demonstrator, as understandably our director does not want to use his "S" as a demonstrator

I don't see a problem with using an S, it helps to emphasise that this is "non-invasive surgery" that can be reversed easily. Extra important now we're living with IVA.

My reverse gears comment was tongue in cheek, what I was hinting at is how you might implement a reverse. An add on in the drive chain after the existing gear set seems the most obvious approach.  One thing I couldn't make out is if the diff is in the same place and using standard Mini drive shafts? I'd have thought there could be an equally interested market for single seaters, that might prefer the symmetry of equal length drive shafts.

Will the boss's car be taking to the track to advertise your engineering abilities when it's completed?

Exactly what we want it to do be a fully reversible change so if you want to sell the Mini on and keep the engine you can do.

The reverse is another cluster of gears built into the Hayabusa box with a bespoke selector barrel and extra selector fork. The diff is in a very similar place to a Mini however the drive shafts are bespoke and arn't equal length they are tuned to different diameters to equal the torque wind up, also we did not want to be compromised by the mini output shafts

We are trying to get an engine to the track but wont be the "boss's" Mini

"aren't equal length they are tuned to different diameters to equal the torque wind up" - now there's a potential product in itself, very clever.

I'd love to sit at the lights in a fairly tatty Mini with a supercharged version of this purring away. You might catch one or two people by surprise.

I think there might be all kinds of converted Mini parts up for sale soon when everyone wants one of these!
