Hi all,

Right this is an unusual one. ill try to explain the best I can.

Recently brought a mini as a project, seems pretty solid and in fairly good condition. Brought mainly for the parts 1380 engine J. Anyway point is I decided to hpi the car and it turns out that it is a cat B write off…………..SH*T

After doing some more digging into the history I found out the below

- Car was wrote off in 1999 as a cat B

- Car was then back on the road 2004 taxed mot’d insured….. how?

- I have since been issued a V5C log book, surely this would not happen if the car was a cat B.

Phoned the DVLA and they said they have no record of the accident and the car is ok to return to the road, hence the log book

Then phoned HPI and they informed me that the car is a cat B and cant go back on the road.

Then phoned my insurance to see if I could insure it and they said no.

Question now is what do I do? i don’t want to put any money or time into the car if I cant legaly drive it…..

HELP……

I'd be giving the DVLA the HPi reference and asking them to sort it out.

Cat B can be put back on the road if it does not go to a salvage yard

Did you do an HPI check before buying the car?  Did yu see on the V5 that it said Cat B write off?  All things to bedone prior to signing on the dotted line and handing your money over.

Buyer beware sadly :(

Cat b is for breaking only, legally can't be registered back for the road, cat c and d can however be put back on the road.

I suppose it's possible.  It's the responsibility of the insurance company to destroy the V5C and then the dismantler to produce a certificate of destruction, that in-turn tells the DVLA the car is destroyed.

However maybe back in 1999 people were not as concerned as today ... so the insurance company destroyed the V5C, it then was taken to be dismantled and (maybe) somebody thought I can repair that?

I'm not saying this is the case ...but it's possible?

As to what to do with it ... well it's down to the DVLA I suppose, you could then maybe see if the HPI reg can get updated ...I'm not even certain they would do it as it opens up a whole can of worms.

Go look and do your Internet hunting, if a catb does not go to a salvage yard or breakers is repaired by orignal owner and back the Vic it could go back on the road legally. If it goes salvage it's a breaker. When at me pc I will find a link for you all to read :)

so what is the problem? strip the bits and sell the shell on for someone to race/grasstrack/ministocxs sounds like you were sold what you wanted and the seller just passed the problems onto you how long did the seller own it for?

Insurance category write-offs have frustrated me for years. To the best of my knowledge, the system is run by ABI (association of british insurers) and not by statute, so basically its the insurance company controlling it. We've all seen how inept our insurers can be at times so i'm not surprised.

Not sure i can offer any advice to sort it out but the last time i was involved, it was actually HPI who was the greatest help. A mate had a 2004 ford ranger which he bought new. When he went to trade it in a few years later, he was told it was a cat C in late 90's! Do the maths! Turns out, the issue related to the private plate he had bought for it and the status of the car the plate originally came from transferred to the new car for some reason.

Looks like I will just end up selling the shell without the log book. Seems the only way. Don't want anybody to have these same issues when it comes to insurance.

I just done like breaking minis. I'd rather see them back on the road.

When you did this "hpi" check was it by any chance one if these £3 text checks ? If so don't believe a word it says, I've been to look at cars and they have said it been written off, got the more expensive check around £20 and there was nothing on there about the supposed accident, so I spoke to someone from the text check one and they say it's only a guideline and could in fact be wrong and take no responsibility if it wrong and you should opt for there more expensive check. so with these cheaper checks, it's pot luck.
