Has anyone fitted a programable wiper relay (other that the somewhat pricey black boxes from Minispares, Smartsceen, A Series Spares etc. A)?
As far as I can tell it ought to be possible for £10-£15 with a VW 99 relay, but I can't find any reference to anyone doing it with a Mini.

I bought one of these years ago on sale.... built it.... but never got around to fitting it.

(the kit i bought is based around the 555 & unlike the photo they supply mine has a knob)

Not sure how much the Minispares box is but the Maplin DIY jobbie is only £12.99.

Doing it with a 555 is one way.
Msplun's kit isn't as good as the VW 99 option as you have to use a pot to vary the period. For the latter you press the stalk twice to set the intermittent timing.
You could use an Arduino for that, but quite frankly I can't be bothered to write the code, spec a load of relays etc

I have the Minispares one and it is great. So simple to install, just undo the wiper connections, and fit the relay.

I used a VW99 relay (£1 from scrapyard) on a  kit car using the Lucas wiper system, unfortunately the stalk did not have an intermittent wipe position, so I used a small push button switch on the dash, it worked well & had the adjustable intermittent wipe .

This is the wiring diagram I used to work it out.

I'm sure it's good, but at £54, when JBW picked up a similarly functioning unit for £1, I know what I'd rather buy.

I've seen that wiring diagram. I was just wondering how simple it is to interface with the Mini's loom.

In various forms, these used to be available in lots of outlets as an after-market accessory and reasonably priced, I bought a few (from a store in these parts call K-mart ) and found them excellent. It did take me a bit of time to nut out how to connect it in to the Mini (and Moke) wiring looms as the included diagram wasn't applicable to the set up in the post 76 cars (with the twin stalk).

Worked well for sure. I don't have one in my current Moke though may do down the track. I find the 'flick wipe' function of the Wiper Switch livable, though would have been nice to have the real deal on the last Trip.

I'll dig out some of the hand scrawled drawings I did and post them up.

Well I managed it using Ford wiring to a Lucas wiper motor that was already fitted to the car with no relevant wiring diagram, did take a while though, can't remember how I did it though, probably try again on my Mini, might be easier the second time, especially as the Lucas wiper motor is standard.

I think I came to the conclusion that a latching relay would enable the one wipe position on the stalk to then energise the VW99 relay, but couldn't find one that was cheap enough.

Sorry to drag this one out of the middle of last year, but I read the original post with interest and have just got around to getting a VW99 relay and wiring it up. I'm pleased to say that it works brilliantly and apart from cutting into the brown/light green wire, between the column switch and the wiper motor, all the other wires are add-ons. This diagram is for '84 on carb cars with the wiper switch on the right of the column and two speed wipers.

I've added the diagram below if anyone wants to try it. I know that the VW99 relays are going up in price as more and more people use them but I got mine from Lithuania via ebay for £12. I already had the on/off switch

As well as an adjustable delay, it also gives you three wipes when using the washers which is handy.

Thank you for sharing the wiring diagram, I have a spare VW99 relay, purchased from a local breakers for £1 !

As ! said previously, I've done the conversion before on a kit car that I used to own as a daily driver, a very worthwhile uprgrade.

I think I'll investigate this too. I've got intermittent on my stalks but currently ignore that position. The maplins wiper module I had fitted before I didn't work the best

I believe that the stalks from the injection models have an intermittent position, which can be fitted on earlier models. This would make it much neater as you wouldn't need an extra switch, although at £74 just for the wiper stalk, I decided to stick with the extra switch!

Thanks for dragging this out of the middle of last year. I've still not done it so the wiring diagram is much appreciated.

I think I'm right in saying adding the injection stalks is a bit more complicated for the following reasons:
1) I believe they don't fit directly to the older steering column.
2) I think the multiplugs are different.
3) I'm sure I've read something about the older system might run a higher current through the stalk switches as there are more relays in the injection loom and injection stalks might not take the higher current. (Obviously both systems use relays for wipers so this might only apply to lights.)
I'm sure someone else will be able to confirm or debunk all of the above.
