If the engine hasn't been run you could have rings sticking in their grooves. You could put some oil down the bores and see if the compression improves. Also check the valves aren't sticking in the valve guides, you would see that with the rocker cover off.

Have you got the plug lead rotation the right way around? I've seen quite a few cases where the centre leads have been swapped over resulting in very poor running and diagnosis of doom and gloom, swapping the leads around and everything was well (and a few red faces on some people).

Make sure the valves are not stuck open. If you check the valve clearances this will tell you. You probably need to check the compressions wet and dry, this could also tell you if the rings have gummed up.

I'd second the plug lead swap .. just double check it by pulling the rocker cover, get No1 valves to be fully closed on a compression stroke and see where the rotor arm points too. 1,3,4,2 from there.
My pals 850 would not start one cold damp morning, so he pulled the plugs to check everything ..he put everything back together and only had enough battery charge to just turn it over ...it started! But he had put the leads on wrong (missing on two), so instead of switching it off he swapped the plug leads with it running ...two leads at a time, one lead in each hand! Said his arms hurt for hours afterwards with the shock ...god we laughed at him demonstrating in slow motion pulling the leads off in twos and swapping them as he was slowly electrocuted.

Interesting, the OP has not logged in since his second post when he asked for help, perhaps he's stuck in the middle of nowhere.
