Are you really, REALLY sure you want to convert this Mini back to '88 City E spec????

Things like the original sawtooth seats (similar to your '83 City E houndstooth seats but bigger pattern) are getting very hard to find (http://www.theminifo...-seat-or-cover/) & the way the car looks now does look (sort of) good.... I can imaging Gru (sorry that should read You) driving around with Matt your Minion beside you :P

Not sure what interior colours were fitted in a red City E but it could be Poo Brown!

That black and blue steering wheel looks like it is off an arcade driving game though.....

hi Itsaminithing and  73MkIII

I get what you are saying.. The car will never be special from a historic perspective as it has been welded too much, had too many owners and has no provenance/history. Also it's not a Cooper from the early 1960's... So why go to all the bother and expense to take it back to original... Why not embrace the surfer style and get a full size Minion on the back seat for the fun of it?  Or get lots off them as soft toys...

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Minion-Air-Balloons-Inflatable-Large-Toys-Christmas-Birthday-Wedding-Decoration/152738225383     (hope this link works..)

I'll think about it .. these cars are not for taking too seriously.. There is a middle ground .. I like the nerdy/ retro /Mr Bean look as both me (& neighbour Minion Matt!!) are nearly 50. I want the old steering wheel, steel wheels & original dashboard...

First of all I need to get the shell welded, then rust proof and reassemble it !!

cheers!

Philip

The comment on the new steering wheel wasnt a complement. I hope you find something better.

Agreed -- it is already removed and stored in the shed. It does go with the style of the car but i'm no spring chicken and it doesn't match my grey hair!! lol..

Spent couple of hours each night after work last week scraping stuff from under the car, with heat gun and sprayer containing white spirit and xylene/paint thinner. Just did another 3.5 hours and it is getting cold outside. Hands and feet are numb now.. No pictures to show... it's just scrapings ...

It's at times like these that I wish I had big garage with heating...

Or more Minions

What is your hoped-for completion date?
The amount of effort you're putting into this rebuild makes me ashamed of how little i do on mine.

Do you have a build thread/ pictures of your car please? I couldn't find one..

I'd be interested to see whether you have an older (1960s) or more recent (1980s or 1990s) car, as you have such a deep knowledge of both.

I'm very nosey and curious...  :shades:

I have a deep(-ish) knowledge of the MK3 -it's my favourite.... For everything else i have a spattering of knowledge, a desire to learn, & despite being a Luddite i'm tenacious when researching on Google :techsupport: .

1998 Cooper (did a nut & bolt rebuild/upgrade in 2004/5 ((Link sent)) - now currently trying to recommission), 1975 Mk3 1000 (needs panel work), 1971 Mk3 (resto project that has to go).  No build threads on here yet (medical condition 7 years ago -shouldn't have survived & it's left me unable to do anything much most days :xxx:).

EDIT: Just worked it out -i'm Dr Lothario :ermm:

Itsaminithing , I'm pleased that you survived something serious 7 years ago and that you can now provide me with pointers and stuff to think about. You shouldn't feel bad that you don't do loads of stuff with your cars.. With two mk3s, you must have more than enough to keep you busy for years and years. If you do nothing, they make you more money than what you get in the bank.. I hope you can recommission the 98 Mini soon. When I'm on the road I come over and give a jump-start!

I thought I'd try to post pic/s each day...

After I've remove front and rear sub-frames, engine and gear box.. i thought I'd get a manual

Tonight I spent two hours sanding the engine bay and applying Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 as a rust converter and good base for primer. It goes on blue, and turns black.

Attached File  Engine bay Hydrate 80.JPG   154.15K   1 downloads

The front sub frame got a second coat of Hydrate 80.

A delivery arrived ... a big spanner for removing ball-joints..

cheers Philip
