I bought the car 3 months ago and have worked my way through some of the many issues the car had, basic things but all stuff that was making it unusable, brakes clutch etc. Nothing major but all the signs of a basic lack of maintenance.
So the engine is a mg metro with a bce needle lcb rc40 and minispares evo cam. It's starting now thanks to replacing the cable ties that were being used in place of the proper choke cable clip.
The carb is a problem, the car runs poorly and stinks badly of fuel the dashpot damper piston wasn't connected to the cap, the fast and slow idle were all over the shop.
I need to get this vaguely sorted ready for an mot. I'm not after perfecting this carb set up as I need to swap the carbs to hs series so the car is eligible for hrcr events.
I do not have a couple tune afr meter or have I set the engine timing. The fuel is standard 95ron as I can't find anywhere local to me that sells superunleaded anymore. I have a dribble of castrol valve master that came with the car so will put this in although it is old so I'm not sure how much good it'll do.
Basically best way to get a useable safe carb set up or a very basic general setting. I'm pretty good with carbs as I own and race a v4 bike, I can guess a very good base setting for these easily this hif44 I can't as I don't have the experience.
Choke, if I set this so that the arrow is pointing at the fast idle screw but not touching when the choke is pushed fully in is that correct.
Mixture remove the dashpot and then set the jet flush with the bridge and then riches 1/3rd of a turn
Dashpot oil is good, at the right level, what effect/symptom would the damper piston not being connected give? It's back in place now.

I think you mean that the brass floaty damper end was off?....not sure what affect it would be, but the mixture would be all over the shop.
I usually set the jet about 080" down from the bridge.
The 'choke' set so when you pull the cable the bolt head touches the arrow on the 'cam' or there abouts
Not sure how good as the BCE is a standard needle, but can be Ok for a tuned motor too.
If you can run it till its warm, there is lifting pin (or should be) on the side of the body, it lifts the piston a bit...
set to a fast idle say 11-1200 revs and slowly lift the pin...
ideal is speeds up a bit then drops back to idle
if it dies its lean
if it revs up its rich

I mean connected to the black nut you screw into the dashpot, it's was just sat in the reservoir so providing no damping effect, many many trial and error runs tonight and I've got it a lot closer.
ahh got you now. if it was lose from the top cap then you would have an area of uncontrolled movement meaning over rich and weak so making it a pain to set up as it would not.

I set it to level and then just taken it for a run and adjusted each time, prob about 3 full turns now, I've pulled a plug and it's still lean I'm getting some back firing through the carb and on full throttle it's not keen on pulling, partial throttle to half it feels pretty good.
I read something on mini mania from calver that said the bce was ok for mild time fast road engines? I didn't put it in it's just what it came with like I say I need it running pretty well but not perfect on this carb as it'll be coming off in a couple weeks, then I am try setting up the twin hs4's

The battle I'm having is the previous lack of maintainence and the small little things that have been neglected. Choke cable clip damper rod not being connected.
Bit of trial and error tonight and it 90% there so that's all I was after.

No, missed that bit.
For competition, unless you need the capacity of twins the simplicity of a single would make sense to me. If nothing else its cheaper!

And just for the avoidance of doubt - you are screwing the screw IN to richen? (Sometimes seems the wrong way)

Yeah in to richen, ive got it 90%, the choke cable snapping at 10.30pm last night wasnt ideal. It meant i had to go to my dads and semi break in to one of the out buildings to get to my rotten 92 maintream and nick the choke cable from that, in the end i pulled the entire carb off and then had to return home and fit the choke etc and then re adjust the carbs slightly again.
Sorted now though.
The number on the cap i think is low its like 1305 but i'll let you know as i can't remember. Anyway leaving work now and then i'll take it through for its MOT.
