I like the ARP's as they have the little allen head in the middle of the stud, so you can pull them out easier so you can slide the head forward for removal without pulling out all the car/turbo assy.

So, I've been debating about the gearbox recently. Think I'm now going for a heavy duty helical 5 speed gearset with a quaife atb diff. I really just want a 5th gear to bring the revs down on the motorway, with the advantage of running a 3.1 diff to make it fun around town. I'll be buying a few bits and bobs around the big purchases to keep the project moving forward.

yeah Phil is good isnt he!

gearbox is a tricky one, as all the available " strong" gearsets have a 2.5:1 first, which can be a bit tall, especially for 2.9 FD's, I see the apeal of the 5th, but not sure about its strength. Also i found a 3.1 4 speed fine for cruising on the motor way, 75mph at 4k.

It'll be great until the turbo starts to spool. I'd rather have a solid 4 speed and take the 4k cruising RPM than the risk of it being a box of parts after a thrashing. You kept bleating on about the 4 speed Evo helical by minispares, I'd stick with that idea; they're proven to be strong if you're going to run pub figures.

Mini13 - very happy with the head. should flow a lot more than the standard turbo head. :) As both of you mentioned, It's the strength of the 5TH gear that's questionable. :/ Then again, even the minispares 4 speed heavy duty helical is relatively unproven on turbo engines. minispares state It's good for a 16v, but with the added torque of a turbo it might be the final nail in the coffin.  Then again, I would rather rebuild the engine every 10, and not listen to the constant annoying whine. It's truly horrific. Just hearing the noise on Youtube is bad enough, so being inside the car for a few miles must be a nightmare.  O_O  Steve220, yep I do keep going on about it. I seriously overthink about every part going into the engine. :tumble:  :shy: The gearbox is a major pain in my arse. It's definitely getting a Quaife ATB diff, but the rest of the spec my head is up my arse about. All I want is a quiet gearbox that will put the power down without spitting it's dummy out, and last more that 10k.  :ohno: I loved the standard 998 gearbox, with a 3.1 F/D/R, if I remember rightly. It worked with the engine so well, but this is a 1293 turbo, so completely different.

(Walk to the fridge and get yourself a cold beer after reading this, you deserve it). O_O  :D

Atb is great, really made a difference in my car,

Yeah, im curios about the strength of the helical kit, Im sure the gearkit is plenty strong enough, its the sideloading effects on the case I'm concerned about. Im sure it'll be fine in most cases, but ones your past about 200hp, doing drag starts who knows eh!

Colin is the only person I know of using one so far. And he is running 200+ ponies, only time will tell I guess.

Out of curiosity, sideloading within the standard casing - where is the weak point that gives way due to the load? I'm trying to avoid straight cut like the plague, and at 150lbft of torque so far, my box is coping well. But then again, I don't launch it..at all.

good question, we all know of the 3vs 4 bolt main carier section where they are prone to cracking, also some people have managed to push the whole diff assy out the back of the box, to be honest neither of those really sound like sideloading issues, but I do wonder if movenement in the case causes the gears to go ut of ailignment and put stress on the teeth, obviously a SC kit wouldnt eaperience that as much. it would need a much clevererer chap than I to research that though.

I find it all intriguing! I've seen many different ways that gearboxes self detonate, but guess the limitation is it was never designed to put the power through it that some of us make!

Fear not, my project is still moving forward very slowly. :shy:  I've recently bought a Fiat Seicento radiator, and Matiz 65A alternator. I'm planning on a front mount setup to aid cooling. I'll also need a Powerlite slimline starter motor and remote oil filter kit. O_O  :tumble:

I put a front mounted radiator in mine, started with a fiat one but couldn't get it to fit as it fouls the transfer case. I ended up using a Kawasaki z1000 radiator because it's shorter (pic below)

Got my Powerlite slimline starter motor today. I'll mock it all up tomorrow, and see how much room I've got to play with.

I’ve not posted any updates in a while. I bought a r53 cooper s recently that’s cost me a small fortune, so no mini turbo parts for a while.🤦🏻‍♂️I’m still determined to fit a front mount radiator, and exploring different options/ideas. There’s a fine line between being a genius and a idiot. Only time will tell.😂 my next bright idea is to rotate the inlet/outlet 90 degrees, facing into the engine bay. This would be much better than going towards the inner wing. I’ve noticed other minis fitted with this rad, and they have a slight bend, so thought I would copy. 🥸 I’ve recently been thinking about making a small alternator relocation bracket to place the alternator higher up. It would be fantastic if it all goes to plan.
