Just bought a Mini Cooper 1998 it has failed the mot on emissions what should I look for first ..this is my first mini since my 997 I had in 1970 I have brought it as a project for my retirement but I want it on the road first. Little Ron
When they did the mot emmisions test did they get the cat really hot. Problem with the spi and mpi is the cat is a fair distance from the manifold so you really need to give the engine some welly to get the cat hot enough

As an alternative to searching out a reliable code reader you may wish to consider the MEMS P/C based solution. Information is key when diagnosing either SPI or MPI. Having the capability to diagnose the system will always come in handy
You'll need a key to unlock this mystical world.

Hi,
Sorry I may have mislead you.
As Wiggy says it may not work with MPI.
Worth checking with Sprocket on the other thread if this solution is only applicable to SPI

Your options are: (may not be exhaustive)
Rover T4. (V.v.expensive)
Sykes Pickavant ACR4. (fairly pricey, Rover 3 pod or later and relevant cable needed)
Details HERE
A Chinese reader called a T300. (reasonably priced but apparently a bit 'flakey' due to its dubious origin)
Or borrow any of the above.
