I'm about to have my Elf bodywork finished by a bodyshop, lets call it a full resto with lots of new panels and repair work.  Obviously to finish off the car will need a fair amount of paint shop time for prep & paint. I've had a quote, but I have to say it rocked me back on my heels. I'm just looking for some cost comparison points from people that have had their cars prepped and painted following a full resto please.

Theres a recent thread in this section that gives a breakdown of costs of some work to be carried out, its called 'lets play a game' or similar.  In there it mentions a full respray starting at £2000.  All depends on how much work it needs, the quality of finish that you are after and, to some extent, where you are in the country.

A mate and my father in law did a full paint, bit of repair on a Mk2 Golf GTI.  Not inside, I think under the bonnet was ok.  Painted in the same colour, Helios blue and it was £1500.

i had a "mini" resto 2 years ago, both outer sills, both doorsteps, full front end (scuttle panel, front wings, front panel, repairs to both quarters, then full EXTERNAL ONLY respray, garage also stripped the car and rebuilt i pad £5K cash (so no vat on labour..cough...cough) this included all parts labour and paint, parts where also genuine heritage panels.

Depends also if you need just external painting or full underside, interior and inside bonnet and boot, I would guess a full paint to get a good job would be 3k minimum, think I have spent about £600 in materials to do my own. That doesn’t include tools which is about another 1k, but those have done 2 restos now. If you can do internal and underside yourself would save a lot from total bill.

It really does vary a LOT from one shop to another.

Think about people’s hourly rates. For example, I’ll charge someone £15 per hour to wire up their extension, but the guy down the road will do it for £60 an hour plus vat but include materials...

Depends on how much prep work is needed. You’ve put on new panels, but how much filling and finishing is required?

How much have you been quoted? Did they see the car or just give you a price based on what you told them?

Thanks guys. The car is known to them and they will be carrying out the panel work. Job will be full shell, inside, out, underside, & all bolt on bits. The quote shows just over 200 hours of prep & paint, which in my book is 5 weeks based on a 40 hour week. Hourly rate is acceptable, but whole thing totals £10k for paint!

I'd say 200 hours is about right, what they charging hourly £80?

I would reckon a mid-range body-shop would take c.100 hours at £65 per hour. That's £6500 plus parts & materials.

Thanks guys.

That's interesting Cooperman, you've got half the time at twice the rate. Need to get a few more quotes I think, there is no way I can justify £10k on paint.

Honestly i'd look around, 2-3k would be my sort of guide form experience if bodywork is already ready for prep. Biggest quote I had was 6k and clearly didnt want it.

I have my own shop, we did this one full exterior inc door checks for around 1.8k

But to be honest it was a bit hard earned, i wouldnt welcome any others ones at that kinda of money it was pretty clean with not a lot of repair work

10k seems excessive, but couldnt really say without seeing the car.

I would think 5-6 k should by a real nice job on a car if it has been paneled up.
