    Starting My Mini Up

I have recently acquired a 1990 project and my intention is to build a race car for next season. The finished article will be a 1960's recreation with the usual MK1 rear lights, boot lid, sliding front windows etc

I have found a "Classic" series where the car would be acceptable and the regulations are quite flexible in as much as long as it is in the "spirit" of the period it is allowed. Internal changes to engine, gearbox are allowed together with suspension, infact the only real stipulation is the choice of wheels/tyres at 10" 165/70.

Before I go off and waste my time and money on the wrong things my question is if you were able to build a mini that would be both competitive but on a budget, what specification would you opt for? I am thinking of all areas including engine, carbs, gearbox, brakes, suspension etc. Are there any "must haves" or "don't do's" ?

All suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Mike

I would have to read the rules and specifications before answering that.

As Nick said, any more info on the series itself would help a lot in answering your questions. Series sounds very interesting though!

Those regs sound like a nightmare, they'll be open to all sorts of interpretation. As above, I'd like to know what champs they are?

What sort of racing do you want to do?

DEWS Championship is good if you want to do sprint & Hillclimb. Mini Miglia if you fancy circuit racing. Track days require you keep it road legal (so no winged race seats).

Whatever you decide always read the regs & then re-read the regs again. Get a copy of the MSA bluebook and do your research into what your competitors are doing. If you're thinking of doing something & no one else on grid is doing it more often than not there is a rule not to.

Be honest with yourself about if you're willing to commit to a full race season or do you just want to have fun on track now and again.

Lastly, and this is not mean to discourage you, it's almost always cheaper to buy a 2nd hand race car that's already competing in the series you want to do. You can buy a full Miglia or S class cheaper than it will cost to build one from scratch.
