Seen on Mk1 Forum:-

"Please can anyone / everyone consider signing the petition or even writing to the Council. The Motor events held on Madeira Drive are legendary & to loose this historic venue would be a real blow to the Motor Sport community. Many Members have competed at the Brighton Speed Trials in recent years, and the Mini's history at this event goes back to the late 1950's. A number of you have also taken part in other car events on Madeira Drive Brighton, including the London to Brighton Mini run.

The Brighton & Hove Motor Club have asked for our help in trying to keep this iconic event going, so please read their request as follows:

"Brighton council closed Madeira Drive to motorised traffic to allow people to exercise on bikes and by walking during the pandemic.
There is now a lobby to keep the road closed permanently and this has a strong backing from the Green Party in the council.
This would mean the end of historic events such as the Brighton National Speed Trials and the Veteran Car run plus many other car and motorbike events such as:The Ace Cafe Incarnation, the Pioneer Run, the Mini run, the London to Brighton Kit Car Run and the Ace Cafe Reunion Brighton Bash to name just a few.
The shops and clubs on Madeira Drive are already suffering badly but if the road is closed to traffic then they will go bankrupt."

There are three ways that your members can help.
1. There are two petitions online for Madeira Drive. One to keep it closed and another to open it up again. The petition to open it up again has twice the numbers as the one to keep it closed BUT we must flood the petition so that ours is 10 times greater. You do not have to live in Brighton to sign this petition, just need to be interested in keeping the road open. Just click on the link below to sign the petition

https://present.brig...4&RPID=35866761

2. Brighton Council have set up an online consultation where people can express their views about their plans.. Again, you do not have to be a Brighton resident to complete this short survey. Just click on the following link below

https://consultation...rking/71da2cee/

3. There is a full council meeting on the 22nd July where we need to present our case so, if you live near enough, we should flood this meeting with supporters who want to keep Madeira Drive open and enjoy the events that take place there.

So come along and let's keep all of these great events going for many years to come."

Note: You can skip all the the age, ethnicity, gender or disability questions in the questionnaire/survey if you prefer and think it is none of their business who people are.

Sorry, missed it, but frankly I can’t believe it’s taken them this long.

I’ve done the L2B 3 times now, and each time I’m amazed the stench of exhaust fumes and oil leaks are tolerated there, knowing the politics of the area.

I mentioned it to my friend on at least 2 of the events.

Motor rallies were described as “ridiculous” by a councillor who said that cars’ days were numbered.

She spoke as councillors discussed future motoring events in Madeira Drive, Brighton, at a “virtual” meeting of the council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture yesterday (Thursday 19 November).

Hi

Brighton and Hove City Council have given landlords consent to the full list of historic motor events for 2021 .....which includes L2B and national speed trials

The irrelevant comments about seeing  a "burning mini" in New Road are from a green party ward councillor - the council officers report on Historic Motor Events  last week,  and an earlier one to Full Council last month  (which the green cllr referred to as biased toward motoring events) were both  fully supported by both the Labour and Conservative parties in Brighton .... and therefore carried.

I believe that the majority of residents and businesses (including council officers and councillors - a few greens excepted)  in the city fully support and welcome L2B / Speed Trials / VW gathering etc  and  the many cultural and financial benefits of being a host and destination for many official licences and and other motoring events. As quoted in the report.

The overwhelming support of petition to quickly reopen madera Drive to cars (it was closed for a while  in response to covid ) ... as opposed to the poorly supported "keep it closed" lobby is an indicator of local feeling. The council and organisers of motoring events have,  and will continue to enjoy a good relationship with the council and its events team and officers  who facilitate the operation and arrangements to host the events we enjoy.

The confected controversy here  is really the local newspaper inventing a fake debate,  to boost failing circulation and provoke extreme and therefore quotable views from any pro or anti car group that rises to the bait.

Matt (Brighton)
