Hi all,

I have read previous threads regarding retro fitting the 3 clock oval binnacle to later cars but have seemed to run into a problem.

I removed the single centre speedo pod with the 4 bolts that go through to the captive nuts in the bulkhead. I expected to be able to then fit the oval binnacle using the same 4 holes and bolts. The bottom two match up but the top two are in line but 40mm too high ( see pics).

has anyone else run into this problem? It also seems like the the binnacle sits quite far back compared with other pictures I've seen, or is that normal?

Thanks Oli

Mine didn't line up when I fitted mine, I used the bottom holes that hold the bulkhead blanking plate on and fitted rivets to the top holes of the binnacle. If you want to use the bulkhead blanking plate you'll have to drill a hole in it for the speedo cable to go through.

Thanks alex-95, hmmmm, don't want to drill any holes in the bulkhead. Looks like I may have to make 2 little extender brackets...

somebody prior to me installed one in mk4. It’s only bolted in on the top 2 studs.

Also, I’m not certain, but my speedo has never worked properly. There’s a problem somewhere between the lower little gearbox on the transmission, the cable (which I’ve replaced) and the speedo. I suspect I have mismatched parts rather than anything being broken. Just a thought.

I recently installed one, I had to drill four new holes for the sides and top of the binnacle, and used the bottom two existing holes for the bulkhead plate. You’ll also have to trim away the corner of the binnacle to make room for the heater hose.

Also, it’ll seem to sit further back if you still have the padded vinyl covering on the top and bottom dash rails, earlier minis didn’t have them.
