Rwd Mid Mounted 20V Turbo Vag Mini

Newbie with his first thread.  Currently making a mid engined 20VTurbo Mini, it need a fair bit of work so I decided to mid engine it as I always wanted a turbo Mid engined Mini.  Hope everyone approves.

 

One Mini needing a bit of loving.

 

 

Replacing the scuttle, flitch and step.

 

Inner sill repairs.

 

30mm heavy wall box run up the inside of the sills.

 

Floor repairs.

 

Cage mounts fitted along with main hoop, main strap for the suspension and engine mounts.

 

Cage bars installed.

 

Rear seat base, heel board, boot floor and rear arches removed to make rear triangulation points.

 

Donor engine removed to test fit.

 

Strengthening hoop for the rear.

 

Rear valance fitted.

 

Diagonal cross bars fitted.

 

Gussets added to the diagonal ends and the rear hoop.

Going to be running shortened VW shafts, VW MK 5 gen 3 rear wheel bearings with VW MK4 rear discs and calipers. All have been redrilled to accept the 4 x 101.6 pcd.

Things have slowed down a bit now, but still battling on.

Got an Astrali wheel.


Seat subframes fabbed up.


Seats and harnesses test fitted.


Front mounted Rad test fitted.


Rear mounted intercooler.


Fuel cell waterjetted out and tacked together and testing the fit.




MK1 retrofit grill fitted, now has a face.

What mounts to the heel board are you going to use?

The mounts are VW type ones used in the Mk5 platform front wishbones. 12mm bolt through the centre and fit into a 38mm tube welded onto the swing arm.  Have used the rubber standard type for the mean time, if they are too flexible they will be changed to polyurethane.

Small update.

 

New discs for the front brakes.

 

Fuel cell tested and all fittings mounted up, fitted a 275LPH pump.

 

Gaz shocks and brakes fitted.

 

Rear calipers fitted.

 

Driveshafts back from being shortened and fitted up.

As everyone loves swaged holes on a car.
 

 

 

Finally started on repairing the doors.

Removed and stripped out.

Crusty in places, so a good call to reskin them.

New bottom repair panel fitted.

The ends closed in and some protection sparayed on.

Skin fitted on, welded and edges rolled, happy with the result.

 

 

Other door being reskinned also, bottom replaced and welded in

Made a start on the closing in panel mounting plates for the rear parcel shelf/firewall

 

 

Interesting build and should make for a quick mini. Just an observation, now that you have changed the scuttle, trial fit the windscreen before you get the car painted. The right hand corner looks slightly off although that could be from the angle of the picture.

Better to do now rather than messing with new paint.

Thanks sonikk4 for the advice and the positive comments, I was worried that the screen might not fit after the scuttle work.  Thankfully I have trial fitted it in and all fits and lines up ok so hopefully crisis averted.
