Hi

I have recently acquired a 1969 Mini 850 which I am currently taking stock of to understand what exactly it is in terms of originality and condition so we (its actually my wife's car) can plan what to do with it.

In particular, there are a couple of sensors which have me stumped. Can anyone tell me what this is. It has a wire going to the coil and another disappears inside the cab so Im presuming its a gauge sender.

Secondly t[here is this which I presume is the temp sender. The gauge doesn't seem to work, but I would have thought the long adapter which the sender is fitted into would render it almost useless? or is it a known Mini thing?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Ben

Hi,

The first photo is the reversing light switch for your remote shift gearbox.

The second looks like a capillary gauge water temp sensor.

Cheers, Steve

This they are, however, neither are original to the car.

Thanks. The reverse light is a surprise, Id never have worked that out. Presumably a shallow bolt can be screwed in in its place should I wish to remove it?

Also, is there any reason why the water temp sensor is in such a long adapter? Presumably this would keep the sensor outside of the block and thus wouldn't accurately see the coolant temperature?

Looks like a piece of gas pipe ... rather than the correct adaptor piece

Capillary type sensors have a bulb on the end that cannot be shortened and is relatively easily damaged usually through shock or hitting the end on fitting. The sensors are available with different length bulbs for different applications. If a long bulb sensor is fitted into a short depth hole it is quite common to require the use of a spacer.

If your lucky the length will be stamped onto the clamping nut. It might be on the gauge assuming it hasn’t been replaced with a different type, otherwise it’s pull the sensor and see.
