Let's consider two more unusual thngs.

1. Does it have a servo? If it does, it could be brake fluid burning due to a leak in the servo unit allowing the fluid to leak into the induction (vacuum) area. .

2. Is there any chance it could be steam? I know it sounds unlikely and I'm sure you would have thought of this, but thought I would mention it. A small crack in the head in the exhaust tract area could let a small amount of coolant into the hot exhaust area.

There's no substitute for an Italian Tune Up to find out whether this is a temporary problem, or not. Get it out and make it sweat.

Finally got around to removing and stripping the engine. Good news is everything was normal except the rings were very sharp on the edges which my engine guy picked up immediately. Crank and all bearings good, bores and piston all good.  I was advised by several people that rings were an issue ion these engines but am surprised that worn rings could produce this much smoke. Still not complaining this will be a relatively cheap rebuild. Hone the bores, polish the crank, new bearings all around and a new oil pump. Whilst apart fitting hardened seats so may change guides and definitely the stem seals. Happy days.
