Hi I've just bought a 1965 green Mini 850 for light restoration. It's been in the same family for the past 50 years and has only done 9,800 miles. There is service history info since 1980.

There is no rust other than slight surface rust in a few areas. The mechanics are all sound. New subframe and floor pan in 2011 and fully undersealed everywhere.

My plans are to respray it, re-chrome the shiny bits and repaint the wheels. The driver's seat vinyl has a split and there is a small tear on the rear bench - I'll need a specialist to repair these. It also needs a new steering wheel and sun-visor. The engine bay just needs a clean and the rocker cover repainting.

I would love to hear your thoughts and recommendations for body-shops, chrome shops and upholstery shops near Nottingham. Does anyone have the correct new steering wheel and sun-visor they would like to sell. Some photos to follow. Also what are your thoughts on value now and when restored? Cheers Steve

What a little gem! I'd be tempted not to over restore it and try to retain as much patina as you can - the market likes that these days.

Good idea keeping it as it is.

I would check the bodywork to avoid further rust damage, and let it as it is. Maybe just polish the chromes. If it's not perfect it's not an issue, the car is anyway 55 years old ;)

My dad has an unrestored car from 1969, everybody likes to see it with its damages. It's part of its history.

Don't re-chrome anything!!!!

You'll be amazed, at what you can do with a good quality chrome polish. I nearly threw some headlamp surrounds away as they were dull and rusty, but now they look better than some of the new ones you can buy!

Great car by the way! As said above, try to stem any further corrosion and make sure it's all solid, but keep as much of that patina as possible.

Thanks all for the nice comments. I think the photos perhaps make the paintwork seem better than it actually is. It was sprayed in 1990 but it looks like a DIY job and is very bad and so I think it will benefit from a respray. I'm going to leave the interior as is and just give it a good clean. I will try and get the seats repaired rather than recovered. I'll have a go at polishing the chrome.

I will need a few spares - window channels and cabin air intake pipe. Where is the best place to buy these?

Great looking Mini, if you are going to get it resprayed, I would get the body shop to check the outer sills out as they look to me like oversills rather than the correct 4 flute ones for that age of car. Might be worth getting them changed and painted body colour as they would have been originally. Regarding parts- body parts I use M-Machine as a preference and mechanical parts Mini Spares interior Newton Commercial. Good luck with the project

I believe those hub caps are Clubman ones so you might want to change those  - would improve the look IMHO - also the filler cap looks a bit 80s?

Nothing wrong with an aftermarket steering wheel, but agree with you not that one on that car, maybe a wood rim but standard would be good of course

Otherwise nice - almond green always a winner

I'm going to respray the wheels. Does anyone know the RAL number of the correct silver paint? Thanks

Don't think there is a 'correct' silver for a '65 850; I'm 70% sure they were cream/ivory - if they were painted at all.

I found this link very helpful in reaserching what a OE correct car would look like. This and this

That's really helpful - thanks. I quite like the look of the Ivory and I also have the original chrome hubcaps to go back on. Sorry to be a pain but is there a RAL number for the cream/Ivory paint?

Also is mine the 850 saloon or the 850 Super De Luxe saloon?

As you know, RAL are their own commercial endeavour, their colours aren't likely to match 100%. However I've found them very helpful if you email or call them. Having worked on commercial projects we've taken colours to RAL to be 'matched' (much like any paint shop does) and they've come back with their 2 or 3 closest colours.

RAL1013 Oyster white looks quite nice but probably not what you want. My favourite RAL9001 Cream is nice to but again might not be exact. 9002 or 9016 work??? No guarantees mind. I'd suggest doing a google and see if you can find someone willing to send out colour samples.

Next question will be 'what's the correct BMC paint code?' With this RAL should be able offer some guidance. Sadly I'm not educated enough on MK1/2 to tell you the exact BMC codes but one of the other members will be along soon to assist. In the meantime this might be help.
