Rear Subframe Trunnions - Salvageable?

Hi All,

 

On my '88 designer I have just ordered a new (magnum) rear subframe and bush kit. I was hoping to salvage my original trunnions. I have only used a handheld wire brush on them so far, but before I go any further are they salvageable? Number 1 seems the worst and 3 and 4 I would say are ok. But will they be ok with a wire wheel, sand  and new paint or completely gone?

Mine were like that, I dropped them in a jar of white vinegar for a few days and gave them a scrub with a wire brush. Came up well with a few coats of paint

I use citric acid powder dissolved in water,submerge them for a day or so brush them down and they will look new.Steve..

Looks like an ideal time to me to get some shiny billet ones 

Mine looked similar - sandblasted them and then as above soaked them in citric acid for a day. Painted and they look good enough again.

They will be fine for another 30 years at least what are you worried about?

They look no worse then the ones I am going to re-use (eventually). As above I wirebrushed/citric acid soaked mine and gave them a coat of paint.

I have never changed a pair, they dont "wear" out as such

I used a wire brush, then a quick rub with some 150 grade sand paper until most of the rust was off, then painted. I used a smear of grease on the Poly Bushes that I fitted (the only location I always fit them) they've lasted 11 years so far and still plenty life left in the trunnions and bushes

The ones on my lads car (Project Erm in my signature) were grim but he had them blasted and powder coated (yes i know they are bright yellow but sometime in the future that will change) and the car is not on the road......................YET!!!! 9 years and counting.

I know there is a "right" and "wrong" way for the rears, but I could never work out why there was a tall and a short side.
