Afternoon all,

Managed to pass one of the metropolitans finest on a bridge with a handheld radar gun today, going a speedo 80 (76 on gps) in a 70.

There was a bloke next to me going faster so hopefully that distracted him. He had a mate laying on the slip road presumable ready to take chase. However he remained in said layby.

What's the chances of me getting a present in the post in the next 14 days?

Reading online some people say they are only waiting for the serious speeders, some say they just record the plate and send one in the post.

Also metropolitan police say they use a 10% +3 so under that rule im under the threshold.

10% +1mph is the leeway for the difference is speedometer readings.

So you are safe at 77 in a 70 zone.

A couple of months ago i fell foul of this in a 30 zone, so coming down from a 50 zone i looked down and saw 35 indicated and thought that was me done but however that was not the case.

Thats not a mandatory rule. Its totally up to the district. Some have zero tolerance while others are 10% +2mph or inbetween. I got caught on camera in scotland doing 31 in a 30. I learned the hard way.

No, you are not safe with those assumptions.

Pistonheads 'Speed Plod & the Law' need a copy of the paperwork for this. For years they have been asking for confirmation that prosecutions have happened at less than 10% over so far without a result.
1 mph would invite a solid defence as police equipment is not that accurate and in engineering everything has a tolerance for errors. 1 mph is less that the width of the speedo needle.
Please log on to Pistonheads and post the paperwork as the lawyers on there do seriously need to see it.

I did years ago, probably 5. I even updated it a couple years ago.

There were plenty of people in the various threads on there that had been fined for going just over the limit. I was one of many in the thread.

Way back in the '60s, my brother was prosecuted, in Scotland, for doing 31 in a 30 limit, on a pushbike!

Hand helds aren't taking pictures to my knowledge, they are checking speeds and would pull over those travelling too fast. Don't believe you'll get a ticket.
