In the olden days, before electricity and indoor toilets, wasn’t there a recommendation to lubricate the distributor cam surface to minimize wear on the heel of the contact breaker arm? A drop or two of oil on the felt pad or a slight smear of grease on the cam?

Yes you are correct and the occasional drop to lube the bob weights too

And some on the screw under the rotor to lube the spindle/can.Steve..
