I've never been much interested in sailing but hot dang, I'm mesmerised by these new boats!
I feel like I'm in a parallel universe watching these flying machines!
I've a few nerdy questions if there's any yachties on TMF?

Was not the moth dinghy the first to try foils thus the flying moth?

Not the first...but an early class to actually change over to foilers. There were experimental sailing foils going back to the 1930's
Icarus was an experimental Tornado on foils:
"1976 – Icarus, a modified foiling Tornado (above), set a new world record in B class at 20.70 knots. By 1985 Grogono and Fowler had raised their speed to 28.14 knots."

I am sure i saw the first round of this a few weeks ago... Ben Ainslie (spelling) and the ineos boat were absolute poo. Technical failures dogged the boat and tgey list every race.
The rest were utterly astonishing.
Sounds like you saw the earlier pre-Xmas round-robin series where UK was utter *******. Then they sorted it out and went undefeated in the points-counting Prada Cup round-robin, winning early advancement to the finals they are now in. Luna Rossa had to battle the USA through more races got get here....and this likely improved them substantially while UK could only do testing, no racing. Seems the more these boats are raced, they better they become (both boats and crew).

One question I have for these new boats...what is the bowspirit actually for? They just seem to be using it to hang a camera system off during these events. Never seen any sails flying from it.

The technology now is just ludicrous. I kinda stopped watching when they got to the foiled keels and were draping shrouds over them before the boats were pulled from the water.

Yes, I was wondering if their earlt form has shot them in the foot by them having less practice.
I'm just in the middle of watching today's matches.

End of the line for the UK.

I thought their biggest failing was in strategy - they had terrible starts every race which left them on the back foot and having to react rather than drive the race. Not an impressive showing IMHO.

Yep, just didn"t have the pace in the overall package. Would have liked to see them in a higher wind condition which seemed to close up the performance gap.
LR is the only boat with a boomless rig and seems to give them a lot more control over lower section of main shape. This gives them more power when needed lower down on sail, moving center of effort of whole rig lower. Pays off in low speed manouvers and getting up on plane.
Like i said at the start, I know little of sailing so I don't know what that means.
Like Magneto says, I though Ineos had mostly crap starts, the Italians had the jump on them almost every time

starts are important, no question. However UK did win starts in the last two races and LR closed up, crossed them and never looked back. Starts are not the whole story in UK's results. They were never really able to close up on LR throughout each race, not a sign of a matched or better performing boat. They typically lost ground to LR each and every leg. There's only a few ways to close on a faster boat, via favourable wind shifts or issues on the leading boat. These never happened.
