I have bought some new LED headlight units.

From what I can see they would pass the headlight test on an MOT, with a flat beam.

The issue I can see seems to be with the MOT update following Brexit which states:

‘Existing halogen headlamp units should not be converted to be used with high intensity discharge (HID) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. If such a conversion has been done, you must fail the headlamp.’

However, I am not converting the halogen unit by fitting an LED bulb, I am replacing the who unit for a sealed LED unit.

Any ideas... I'm hoping I haven't wasted my money.

Thanks

The way I see it is a complete lamp unit replacement is ok,it is aimed at "bulb" replacements in reflector/lens assemblies not designed for such.Steve..

If you're replacing the old complete h4 headlamp assembly with a complete led headlamp assembly you should be OK for mot although I'll have to check if the led assembly requires any sort of 'E' marking.
You're not allowed to fit leds or hid's into an existing h4 headlamp unit on post 1986 vehicles.

Can't see any mention in mot manual of 'E' Mark being required.

Thanks for the replies.

The units do have an E mark, though I don't think its for the UK. However, as stated its not a requirement for MOT in the UK.

I am going to double check with the place that does my MOTs when I get the chance and ill get back to the thread with an answer.

In the mean time if anyone has more info please add.

Thanks

Just ask someone who does MOT testing.

When I was in the UK, if I needed anything clarifying, I would just pop in and ask the tester.

The machines used for checking the headlamps are very thorough, and if the beam is not correct, it's a fail.

It was clarified recently in another thread. Basically, they’ll pass as long as they’re ok on the beam tester.

An E mark will show it meets standards that still apply in the UK....

if it's genuine.

And for a RHD vehicle ... lots of ebay headlamps turn out to be LHD when fitted ...

Just an update for you all. I finally got round to taking the Mini to my MOT guy.

He tested the beam and said he would pass them as the beam was fine.

On a slightly different point when I got there the battery had gone flat and wouldn't start. He jumped me off his battery pack.

However, the lights after this were very very dim.

I have since got home and fully charged the battery and the lights are very bright now.

I have bought a new battery just in case the other one is dying.

Sounds like your alternator is duff to me - with the engine running a good alternator should be able to provide enough volts for the headlights to light up at normal(ish) brightness.

From your description they were running purely off a weak battery.

A little poor of your garage not to do some very basic checks for you before turning you away, given he knew there was a problem.
