I have swapped out my 998cc 1992 engine for a 1275cc and now looking to sell on the old engine, plus gearbox etc

It was running fine before and has done about 75,000 miles

So tricky to try and work out a reasonable price but I was thinking around 600-800? Too cheap or too much?

thanks!

1275 are what everyone wants to upgrade to, 998s have little value.

Hang onto it if I was you and the gearbox will be useful if you ever have problems with the 1275 gearbox....you will have to pay a lot more than £200-300 for that alone if you ever need one in future.

Not everyone wants 1275, especially for restoration projects to standard original spec, so demand for good 998's will increase in future. Also many eventually find the 998 is a lot smoother, long lived engine than the 1275.

some interesting comments, many thanks for that. storage of course an issue but definitely worth thinking of as an alternative!

If you store the engine, squirt some oil in the spark plug holes into the bores and tape over the inlet/exhaust ports in head if manifolds/carb have been removed.

Leave engine on gearbox and then it is fairly easy to store away in corner of a dry garage or shed.

I have to agree with this. If you’ve been watching the scene recently the rise in Mini prices has lead to more people viewing Minis as a serious classic car, which in turn has lead to more people restoring to original. Because of this I can see demand of good 998s going up.
