Ignition Coil Bracket

I know this is a silly question but i hope someone can help with a simple solution.

 

I'm restoring red1 which I obtained a few years back, and am currently re-installing all the engine electric bits, alternator, solenoid, fuse box etc.  

 

The coil bracket designed to fit on the cylinder head bolt is not there and I don't want to disturb the head.  If I install the coil direct to the flywheel housing using its own clamp bracket, it will foul the plastic 4" air inlet duct that goes into the wheel arch.

 

I have the bracket designed to fit on the cylinder head and the coils clamp bracket, these were used together and stood vertically i.e. one bolt into the flywheel housing and the bracket standing upright. I'm assuming this will come loose and eventually wobble.

 

I think I'm going to have to manufacture a bracket unless there is a simple solution and I'm just being thick.

 

So has anyone got any ideas, please help

I’ve had mine hanging from the heater takeoff stud on the head and it’s been fine. There was enough length on the stud to add the coil bracket an an extra nut and not disturb the heater takeoff



Later Aussie cars also had coil mount bracket on the alternator bracket. You can really mount it anywhere it fits as long as your wires are long enough

Timmy, I have a pre A+ engine with a water tap on the LHS of the head like Pauls (see below) but your bracket looks really good I’m sure I can adapt is the bracket an Aussie spec?

Paul I like the vertical option as well is the bracket an Assie spec or did you make it?

I have two brackets both with welded nuts on the back to take the coil clamp.  The shorter version seems to be what Mini Spares sell now 12G2994 but the angle fixing piece is to short it fouls the engine block.  Also the bolt hole is to small for a cylinder head bolt and to big for the water tap bolt a minor detail but it appears not to belong, I’ve tried it on my A+ engine as well and it’s the same.

The second bracket in my image is the original.  It has a longer shaped fixing piece and the correct hole size but I’m reluctant to mess with the head.  If I did take the last head bolt off and fitted the original larger bracket it would solve the problem but I’d be interested in any technical info as to the risk I’d be taking with the head.

I have re worked the shorter bracket and fitted it to the water tap front stud ( see image), but I’m not happy.  One it blocks access to the engine mount bolt and I don’t know if it my shake loose at the wrong time and give me a water leak again I’d be interested in any techie comments.

 

 

 

I used to take my coils off the brackets so they just have the clamp around them and then mount them to the idler gear housing using the two pre tapped holes which you can see in your top picture.
The coil lies in line with the engine and looks more tidy.

On mine the head stud next to the wok is longer than the rest and the coil bracket fits to that with a second nut.Steve..

Gas, what did you do about the air intake duct? see my 1st pic the coil will foul it if mounted on the flywheel housing

Good point.....I never had those air vents in my minis.

May not be any help but I used a DSN coil bracket upside down and drilled a tapped a piece of aluminium rod that screws into one of the transfer case holes, it clears the air duct once fitted.

Hi, I believe the bracket is original to the car. The coil can be seen in this position in the Mini K brochure. A quick Google of Oz Cooper S Mk2 shows the same arrangement.

The coil bracket has one loop that goes goes into the threaded hole, plus a little locating tab that goes into the small hole.

The one I use now is made from simply an oil coil bracket, just bent and an extra hole drilled

I do like that DSN bracket and that's a very pretty engine bay its in, like that as well jealous as hell.  I am a bit surprised that this question may not be so silly after all.
