Are you supposed to wash off por15 metal ready before painting over it? This seems like it would just encourage rest and cause a greater risk of trapped moisture, but the bottle says to rinse throughly afterwards for prep work. What's right?

Cheers!

Yip, wash it off thoroughly and dry it with a cloth, I use a hairdryer and a clean dry paintbrush to get into all the little bits to thoroughly dry it

It does seem mad wetting a bare metal panel but the water completes the chemical reaction.

I have some metal ready too, im going to do my i've got my boot down to bare metal which im going to use the metal ready on. Im also going to do the rear pockets.

Because the rear pockets and boot are abit dodgy i dont think i'll be able to get every little bit of water out. Will the stuff still work to a certain extent if i just brush it on and let it dry?

It will work but you may have a bit of a chemical reaction under the paint after a while.

Use a rag and wipe as much of it as possible off and a wet paint brish for the tight spots.
The more you remove the better.

Ok cool i'll do that. Dont want no chemical reactions under the paint!

I don't normally post on this part of the forum but saw this thread title when I logged on.

Metal Ready is a phosphoric acid wash. Remember that you're supposed to keep the panel wet with it as long as reasonably possible to develop a deep grey appearance to the metal. Don't let it dry uncontrolled to forming a white/grey splotchy appearance. If that happens, retreat to get a uniform grey coating.

When you've got the uniform coat, rinse the panel with clean water and immediately towel dry the surface. You can follow that with the hair dryer as mentioned above if you like. Before painting, wipe the panel with the normal prep-solvent, acetone, or lacquer thinner and use a tack cloth to remove any residue left by the towel.

The rinsing is necessary to remove active traces of the acid which may react with the primer and/or top coat.
