Popping Noise In Engine Bay?

Upon high revs there is a popping bang within the engine bay that causes the car to jolt slightly and then a smell of petrol. The noise isnt hellish loud such as a backfire but I think loud enough to be heard by the innocent bystanders. This does not seem to happen when the choke is pulled out and also when going fast there is a air crackling within the engine. by the way i do not have any air filter at present.. getting k&n fitted on saturday. The car seems to be struggling up hills and reaching high speeds and when i pull the choke out its all fine and dandy so what could this be?
Thanks

get the old air box back on for now and it should even up the mixture (dependent on weather you've installed the new needle.)
but if you've put a stage one kit on without any tuning at all... its really gonna need a session on a rolling road to get the maximum benefit from your money spent.

why are you running it without a filter? quickest way to kill your engine.

Thanks for the advice, im probably going to take it to slark in the not to distant future. Unfortunately with the new kit the original air filter wouldnt fit and the k&n is being put on saturday (nearest day possible).

get it to slark pretty soon - incorrect fuelling can destroy engines relativley quickly.

Also anyone know the sort of waiting times for rolling road tuning at slark? If i call when would i be able to take it in?
Cheers everyone

no air filter until saturday (geting k&N), experiencing backfiring in carb since monday (got stage 1 fitted), is it most likely the lack of air filter causing this carb back fire, and therefore will stop on saturday or is it that it could be running too lean?
We've all already told you that it's running lean in the other thread you started about the same thing! the term 'Lean' is used when there'stoo much air, getting into the engine and not enough fuel - the term 'Rich' means the opposite - too much fuel.
Here's some quotes from the last thread you were talking on earlier:

it sounds like you're getting a backfire through the carb rather than through the exhaust - this is almost always caused by an incorrect (lean) mixture (having no air filter will make this happen), and poor timing can contirbute to this too.

wait till you have the filter fitted, without this your most likely leaning out the mix
I don't wish for this to sound rude so please don't take this as an offensive remark or an insult but people are offering up lots and lots of help and it just doesn't seem like you're listening to any of it!
Running without an air filter will make the fuel and air mixture massively lean. This is why you're having to pull the choke out to get the car running on hills etc - the choke makes the mixture richer to compensate for the massive amounts of air you've introduced to the engine by leaving the air filter off.

+ a baaaad idea for your engine!
It would help everyone, particularly you if you kept to one thread!
