Having worn out several pairs of earplugs in the last few years with no sound deadening in Huey at all, I thought it was about time to install some luxuries, like carpet.

There is no point in putting expensive carpet into a leaky car or on top of a rusty floor, but in the last eight months Huey has had a new floor, arches repaired and doors refurbished and rehung, with new door seals. The new panels were sealed with 1-2-1 epoxy mastic before the car left the repair shop and the whole underside, sills and interior of the new crossmember were waxoyled.

So if he's going to have some home comforts that hopefully will last, now is the time.

First, out with the seats ... 4 bolts on the floor and three clip-off harness fastenings. All was well with the previous repairs, so I started with cheap foil-backed bitumen on the floor at the back and second skin spectrum sludge in front and as far up the engine bulkhead as I could reach

I didn't use the sludge thickener but applied several coats to get around 2mm thickness.

The door cards & other furnishings will come later :)

I also sludged the roof and bonnet. The roof lining is tatty but I may be able to rescue it.

The Newton Commercial carpet kit is good stuff but needs fettling. For the engine bulkhead I pushed the separate felt section up into place, made a freehand drawing of it and then drew on top the shape of what I thought it should be, made a cardboard template and then drew round that on the carpet before glueing the carpet & felt together. :)

The rest was straightforward enough and no doubt I used too much glue since the tube supplied soon ran out, but I had a spray can which was just the job. I only hope the carpet will come off if necessary but one advantage of being a very old person is that it probably won't be me who has to try

The battery area behind the driver's seat was a bit tricky but it should be ok

And then it was just a matter of polishing the gear gaiter and putting the seats back :shifty:

So now while driving along I can actually hear some sort of music coming out of the little JVCs in the air vents. With the doors upholstered and the roof lining back in it should be quite refined. But I doubt there'll ever be anything better than Huey in full song :)

Cheers. If you mean the sludge, it's pricey. See here, but maybe it's cheaper elsewhere. There's a youtube demo somewhere.

Scientifically I can't say. In simple terms when I used to get in Huey and shut the door it went "clang" and the metallic sound echoed from the roof. Now it goes "clunk" and there is hardly any echo. There is also less road noise. The engine is still pretty loud because the bulkhead is only insulated halfway up on one side. But it's a more bearable drone than before. Besides, I prefer to hear what's going on.

For advice on insulating the engine bay go here.
