I was driving down a dual carridgway at around 60mph. When the drivers side bonnet pin failed, the bonnet moved and the catch came undone and flipped back bending the bonnet and scratching the wing. Then the passenger pin snapped because of the stress on it. Im fuming, I put the bonnet in the back and drove home, so angry I slammed the passenger door and the door pocket came off.

Anyone got an old bonnet knocking around?

Also, where do I stand from where I bought the Pins? there from a proper rallying shop. The packing didn't have any, "for show use only" or anything on them. They were proper job rallying ones. Can I claim the cost of the pics back from them, how about the damage too the car?

they'll probably said you should of fitted bonnet pins on the front of the bonnet and not left it on the standard catch

Looking at the pics youve put up, looks like the pins are on the wrong way! Pins are supposed to go ACROSS rather then UP/VERTICAL. I've never seen anyone only have pins on the rear of the bonnet, usually 4 pins are used. But thats just what I've seen from my years of rallying.

My experience is that a bonnet pin is unlikely to fail and cause that unless it is fitted badly.

I notice you have the rubber sleeve on the pins themselves - how much pressure do these exert on the bonnet with the pin closed? Do (did) you have to push down to fasten the pin?

The rubbers also look quite long - did you have the back of the bonnet raised?

How could it be installed incorectly?

Why what's wrong with the catch?
How could you mount a bonnet on pins without having them veritical?

The bonnet was raised yes, the rubbers exert the tiniest amount of preasure just to stop it from rattling. You can close the pins without pushing it down.

Ouch..thats odd. Sorry i cant help you, i have a spare bonnet but im far miles away.
Those are the famous bonnet pins we were talking about! You have to use front bonnet locks or locking stripes with them, as sid above, the standard front lock isnt enough to retain the bonnet.

The catch on the mini bonnet is very..... well lets say pants. I can open the bonnet on mine just by nudging the bonnet (allbeit quite a hard nudge but still, it opens). I'm guessing the catch didnt stop your bonnet from opening?

Basically next time mount the pins so they point ACROSS your bonnet, so left to right rather than front to back. If you hit a bump in the road then the bonnet could jolt and slide forward, which is possibly what has happend in this instance.
