Hi there, i am about to replace my carb'ed engine (94 mini 35...knackered gearbox, many, many oil leaks) with an engine out of a '96 Spi. Can anyone confirm if my original distributor will fit straight into the newer engine , has it got the same drive ? i am hoping to do the swap this weekend
and as i am over in ireland i thought i'd better check before i start as it usually takes 3/4 days for any parts to arrive from the UK. thanks in advance...

The distributor will fit into the new engine, but if the origional engine is a 998, it is likely the advance curve will be wrong for the 1275 and the power will be down.
It would be better to get a 1275 dizzy out of a carb cooper or late MG metro which would be electronic not points.

Thanks for that. yes my original engine is 1275 with the electronic ignition system so i should be okay. i will only be using the engine itself out of the Spi and swapping over everything else (carb ,electrics etc.).

Well it sounds like you will be fine with what you have.
One problem you will come accross is that there will be no water temp sender on the cylinder head as the hole is not drilled on an Spi.
The solution would be either to get the spi head drilled and threaded by an engine shop or fit your existing head on the spi motor.

thanks again kerrin. you're right about the temp sender, but i have found that the easiest way to sort that is to take off the thermostat housing (the bit just under the stat ) and get that drilled and tapped. thatwill save me having to take off the head.....i hope.

Sounds good. If it works ok can you post up a photo/description of what you did, I was on the verge of a head swap as I am really nervous about letting the local and only engineering shop loose
on my spi head.

Yes. That is the exact one fitted to the car. The engine has just gone back in and I am trying it closer to the thermostat housing to see how it works, it always seemed to under read when plumbed into the manifold heat pipes in the other car. Once I get it fired up I will
report back
