Leyland 850 with metro engine - pre verto clutch

My mini has just been out back on the road and the clutch has been feeling a bit stiff and the clutch travel is only like 5cm, so i adjusted the clutch as per Haynes manual and now the gears wont engage with the engine on.

The clutch travel is really short still, i have just bleed the system and i put a new clutch in before i replaced the engine ( i did put the C washer the correct way up)

thanks.

Lever the arm out by hand until the throw out stop touches the casing and chock it. See if the pedal is still as stiff (don't pump it too many times) and see if you can move the stick in to gear.

If the pedal remains stiff, or you can select gears, it's the pedal box or hydraulics.

Is the big stop nut pressing up against the wok when the pedal is pressed ( need a second person ).
If so...back it off....and adjust as per Haynes.

no i have screwed that nut right out. The travel of the clutch arm seems just too short and this is the same as the pedal travel

Are you saying the pedal only goes down 5mm or the lever on the wok only moves 5mm?

If the latter, either you need to bleed again, or the master cylinder is goosed, or your reseal of the slave hasn't worked.

Have you tried pumping the cluch?

Edit: Are you using the mini or the metro slave?

I mean you only feel resistance close to the floor and its in proportionate to the travel of the clutch arm. ( when you puch the clutch pedal it springs back but at certain point along it travel you feel a bit more ressistance - this is when the clutch lever moves.
sorry i hope that made sense.

I have tried pumping the clutch and it did not help.

Im using the mini slave as the metro had a cable clutch.

thanks

mike

Well that sounds odd....does sound like another good bleed is needed.
Did you fit new clevis pins at the master and at the arm? Is the hole on the MC push rod ovaled out?

You're doing this with two people correct?

Press clutch.....hold....release nipple ( keep holding pedal ) close nipple....repeat
