1975 mini city 998

clutch problems

hi
i am going to be fixing my friends clutch on his 1975 mini city 998. the problems we have with it is that you have to pump the pedal for the clutch to disengage. once you have pumped it a few times its ok for a while and then you need to pump it again. i had a look at the fluid in the master cylinder and it looks all murky and dark brown.
i cant see anything fluid leaking from the slave cylinder so is this just a case of me replacing the fluid and giving it a bleed?

also do i replace it with dot4?

cheers

Replacing fluid and bleeding is a good starting point. If that doesn't work it could be either the slave (easy) or master cylinder (not so easy) that need replaced.

It can't be a Mini City though, that wasn't launched until 1979.
