OK, so I've decided to take the engine out and carry out a strip and inspection :) I'll obviously be following the hopefully good advice of Mr Haynes but do any of you good people have any tips that will help me? I'm particularly keen to hear where you guys attach the straps/rope on the engine - I'm hoping to use several lengths of ratchet strap to form a cradle under the engine.

I just use a length of rope loop it under the clutch housing and then loop it under the right hand radiator/engine mount bracket. Bring the ends together above the rocker cover in the middle.

Also it is possible to remove an engine without undoing the hubs. Lift the engine so far so its swinging and twist the engine, use a bolster chisel or similar to pop the pot joints off the gearbox. Becareful you don't tear the CV joint.

Don't forget to undo the speedo cable. :)

I lifted mine with straps but I wouldn't say it was ideal...

Afterwards I bought proper winching brackets and it is much more satisfactory... not expensive either...

My No 1 tip - buy a heap of ziplock sandwich bags to put the bolts and screws from various parts in. Label each bag with a texta pen and keep them in the order you pulled things off. Reassembly is easy as the bag on top of the pile will help with the order you put things back on.

I found I had to take off the upper ball joints and then twisting/rocking the engine to get the CV's to pop out. I took out my radiator and shroud before pulling the engine out as it made getting to the engine mounts a bit easier. I then ground the lip from the radiator shroud to help getting it back in.

I found this guide helpful too:

Good luck, take your time and it is way less frustrating

I hauled mine out via the rocket bolts / head bolts.

Big washers and a chain seemed to work.

I made up a couple of brackets to fit under the head studs.

Thanks everyone. I've made some progress in a couple of hours this afternoon - alternator, distributor, carb, brake servo/master cylinder are all removed and all hoses, connections and pipes have been released as well. Only thing I'm unclear on really is the releasing the driveshaft joints, Haynes says use a tyre lever or similar, and a cold chisel is referred to above, is there nothing that needs physically releasing? No circlips or anything?

i normally cut the cable tie securing the inner cv boot, and pull the driveshaft out, that way theres no need to get the engine oil out, and its nowhere near as messy.

It sounds like you have made good progress. As Samfern said, the drive joints may have a cable tie around the rubber 'boot' that you need to remove. Once you start lifting the engine they should 'pop' apart unless the CV's are held by bolts as in the ausmini link. You can tell by looking at them.

Don't forget the pin through the gear linkage can be a bit of a pig to get out

I used to pop the CV's out of the diff when removing an engine. Now I just seperate the inner CV....easier to re-install also.
If you do decide to pop them out of the diff for removal of engine...don't forget to drain the oil first!

Thanks everyone - it's out :dontgetit: Worst things were getting access to some of the engine mounting bolts (god knows how I'll get it back in), clearing the lcb manifold and undoing the rear engine steady bar which had a rounded off head on the nut so it cut it off!!
