Bought the Mayfair a few months back, while driving it home the speedo stopped. When i got home said to th seller about it and he said he had fitted a new one not long ago. As i was doing a resto on it i ordered a new cable, tried it today and still not working. My question is.....The engine is a 1275 mg turbo engine and gearbox (without the turbo and has a standard unleaded head on) Would the speedo drive be different from a mini drive? and the mini speedo cable not fitting the metro drive? Thought id ask as the PO had problems.... and before i rip any more skin of my arms messing about fitting the cable to the gearbox LOL

Identical to the Mini's, pull on the cable outer to see if there's any play - they can be difficult to screw on at the gearbox end.

Ok cheers, tried 3 times today cable seemed to be in the drive ok, outer cable didnt move. Its ok the speedo end as tried a hand drill on the end and speedo worked. Even tried to turn the cable from the speedo end with my fingers and wouldn't turned...so i thought it must have been seated ok in the drive...Will have another go tomorrow. just wanted to make sure i wasn't skining myself for no reason LOL

With the cable disconnected from the speedo and the inner pushed home properly so it is engaged at the gearbox end, can you see the inner rotate if you push the car a short distance?

The problem seemed to be, that the speedo cable at the drive end is oval and the speedo drive is square! Took the speedo drive right out today so i could see what was happening or not as the case may be. The oval end dose not fit into the square drive. I dont know if all minis have sqaure drives and if so why make a cable with an oval end!! Spoke to mini spares and they said its an after market cable and to send it back. By this time my wrists were sore and swollen so i modified the drive to fit the cable....NOW i have the problem of the battery being flat LOL Not sure if the battery is dead or i have a problem else where....Just cant drive the car to see if the speedo is working or not.....f.....g hope so LOL
