could younot just modify an original loom and possibly retain the original colour code scheme?? it just comes accross as the handier option to me!

i could do but i want to sart from scratch and try and get rid of all those problems you get with a minis electrics. i rally don't want to start cutting and piecing looms together, and adding connections all over the place. i also forgot to add my speedo and gauges are not standard so big chucks of the loom will be redundent

It will be easier if you start building the loom then come back with questions, if you stuck. Otherwise, without being sarcastic, about the most useful tip i could give is, use wire.....

I did this years ago - for a Rally car with all sorts of extras/fuses/light circuits. Just make a ladder drawing of what you need - and lay out the wiring! Obviously you will need a basic understanding of electrics or there may be trouble ahead. And decide if you are going to use different colour cables - or all same colour with numbers on the ends .........

As said - just sit in your drivers seat with a notepad and tape measure, take notes of what needs wires, what doesn't. How long your runs are going to be ect. Then go inside and make up a ladder diagrem!

Easiest way to get all the wires to the rear for indicators, brake lights, tail lights, fuel pump ect is to use a 12/13 pin trailer wire, then just wire them in from the trailer wire, in the boot.

Cant help with the ecu, as I've not used a canems setup!

Andrew,

Another recent(ish) post on a wiring loom. I added some links re wire types. No advice on how to do it though, it isn't a bad job but it can look like an bowl of spaghetti half way through, if none of my pointers re cables is any use do get some loom tape and cable colour markers.

http://www.theminifo...howtopic=207440

And yes, the trailer cable is a really good idea as loom taping (I didn't do my rear wiring) that long length would be a real pain and the trailer cable comes tubed already!

colour coded wiring i think will be best and it will be easier to trace in the future. going to start by drawing out what i think i need, then make a list of the parts i need.

I have built wiring looms for 15+ British sports cars. It is too expensive to do the job right for a single car. By the time you buy all the different colored wires, the connectors, and the crimping/solder tools to do the job right it will cost you five times as much as purchasing a harness. You will have a MUCH better job done if you buy a harness premade from one of the specialist firms such as:

http://www.hotrodwires.com/

There are probably numerous firms in UK who offer similar packages. Try a google search. You will be much happier with the end result.
