hi un my mini,
(advantage 1987 modified)
it breaks flasher units constantly, after a while they slow down then stop? anybody no wots happening 2 them?, is this common? 1 lasted 6 months, but once 1 lasted a day

Its probably bad/corroded connections somewhere that are causing the problem, so worth cleaning up the bulb holders first. However...I always change to an electronic flasher unit on older minis.
Its a 3 pin unit, as fitted to later minis (part no DRC8526 I think...), but also found on metro's and rover 200's. If not, you can get a universal one from halfords, part HFU203.
The two wires that come out the back of the current flasher unit (located behind the dials in the cabin) are connected on spade connectors, so pull these off and fit in the new flasher unit as follows:
Two green wires together - into spade marked 49
Green wire with orange stripe - into spade marked 49a
Then you need to run another cable to a suitable earth somewhere on the body, and this goes into spade marked 31
Here's a pic:
