Yeah there was a German Silver Bullet. They had loads of specials that we didn't. My Grandfather used to make the dashes for the German and Japanese models. They had flat wood dashes years before we did.

The thing is that this car will have been bastardised to get it into America. As it says on the ad it's listed as a '67, but the Silver Bullet was a mid '90s car so it'll be quite hard to identify it properly. The shell isn't a '67 because it's a Mk5, and it does indeed have SPi, and an SPi fuel and exhaust system. But the block could be '67 I suppose. It would be interesting to find out why it is classed as a '67.

Anyone know how much of the car needs to be original to get it accross the pond?

someone here said its based on points
but this is a clear cut case of 1 of two things

1) changing vins, hard because old minis have one or 2 vins and new minis have like 5
2) knowing someone in the State Police who can pass the VIN verification. This company has a lot of these cars with titles in Maine. This is a very real possibility
or 3), now that i think of it. Main might have realy lax standards for crossreferencing VIN's from cars like that. Then the idea is, once it has a title in any US state, it just needs to pass a VIN verification from a CHP officer and if the VIN matches the Title and the VIN is not obviously tampered with, then it will pass and you get your new title even in the strictest of states.... which is California

I understand that Siggy, but what I was wanting to know was how much of it needs to be original to get it classed as a '67. From the looks of this car it's pretty much all a mid 90's car, how do they get away with it?

Jeff, there is a points based system over here to prove originality so that would make sense. But that car wouldn't pass as the body counts for 6 points and without those 6 you can't quite get the 10 you need. The shell needs to be the original or an original spec brand new unused replacement.

In fact if you tried to register that as a '67 over here you'd probably end up in Q-plate hell.

It is a 90's car and probably no parts on it are from the 80's let alone the 60's.

Your right you would never be able to retain the original VIN if you followed the law 100%

Well how much do you think it costs to put one in a container all the way from Germany to the USA, and then pay duty taxes and registration?

If it was a good condition '95 ish high equipment level special edition over here you'd probably still be paying over £4000 for it.

sadly, there isn't a really cool car that is just ultra nice and special and leather and wood and all tha stuff that you can get for 12,000
so its still pretty cheap
