Hi all. great forum you have here.
I am thinking about stickin an R1 engine in my 92 cooper (dunno if it'll be FWD or RWD yet cant decide as i'd love it to be rear but it would be easyer for me to build if it was front)
Was just wondering about getting it road legal. does it have to have an SVA test like kit cars or will MOT centers test/pass them.
any help would be good
also if they do have have an SVA test, how much do they cost roughly.
Bless
Si

If its in the back then it needs a SVA test, not sure about the front though

As MiniKid implies, whether it still counts as the original car or not depends on how much it is modified. The rules treat 'radically altered' cars and kit cars in the same way. A lot of people kid themselves that their car is still original despite being very different from the way it came down the line and simply don't bother getting the test done. The drawback to this is that it leaves them open to prosecution in the future if or when somebody official finds out. If there is an accident involoving a radically altered vehicle that is insured as standard then the car and driver wouldn't be covered at all. Unfortunately there are no longer any up to date official on-line sources of information on this since the DVLA's own website was absorbed into the Direct Gov site which is riddled with errors. You should try phoning the DVLA or visiting a local licensing office and getting information from there directly. Or see if there are any kit car forums that may know the information.
